The first exemplification of the Fourth Degree was held #OnThisDay in 1900. Over 1,100 candidates traveled to New York City to take part in that historic occasi...on, coming from all parts of New England, the Atlantic, Southern, and Middle Western States, as well as from Montreal, Canada. Pictured are charter members of the Charles Carrol Assembly established on that day. During the Knights of Columbus’ 1899 Supreme Convention, delegates approved the creation of an additional degree of membership in the Order that would exemplify the principle of patriotism and focus on Catholic citizenship. When the Knights of Columbus was founded 136 years ago, our namesake, Christopher Columbus, was a symbol of the idea that there is no contradiction in being a Catholic and an American. Today that stands true for all Catholics of all ethnic backgrounds. The day was first enshrined as a legal holiday in the United States through the lobbying of Angelo Noce, a first generation Italian, in Denver. The first statewide holiday was proclaimed by Colorado governor Jesse F. McDonald in 1905, and it was made a statutory holiday in 1907. In April 1934, as a result of lobbying by the Knights of Columbus and New York City Italian leader Generoso Pope, Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed October 12 a federal holiday under the name Columbus Day. #kofc #msga66 Knights of Columbus
