Meals on Wheels Yolo County

Many, many thanks to you, our community, for your generosity during last week's Big Day of Giving. We brought in $32,129 from 178 donors on the Big DoG website, and $11,055 from 19 donors on our own website, for a TOTAL $43,184 FROM 197 DONORS! This was more than $8,000 over goal. We are so fortunate to be part of our Yolo County community, as you support so generously the work that we do. Thank you.

This past week, we recognized and thanked longtime Davis volunteer, Gary Peterson, for his 17 years of service as a Meals on Wheels Yolo County delivery volunteer! The Putah Creek Crawdads played some tunes, our Board Chairman, Dr. James Barrett, spoke, and Davis Mayor Gloria Partida spoke about the importance of volunteering. And, there was cake! It was a small and Covid-careful event, but it felt great to enjoy others and to celebrate Gary as he and his wife, Betsy, leave for their new chapter of life in Colorado!

Fun Halloween potluck and costume contest for our staff! We hadn’t had a staff party since Covid began...too busy and wanted to be safe. Everyone had a great time, even while physically distancing and wearing masks, and the food was great! Happy Halloween from the staff of Meals on Wheels Yolo County!

HOORAY! Today, we transitioned from the 2-day-a-week deliveries of frozen meals that we’ve had to do since Covid began, to 3 days a week delivering hot meals to our folks! Hot food, prepared in our kitchen and delivered ready-to-eat, is just in time for the cooler weather of fall (whenever it arrives!). And another day of being able to greet our folks to alleviate some isolation is a definite plus!

The Kona Shaved Ice truck came to our main office and central kitchen today to serve up some cool, tasty treats for our staff and delivery volunteers! We are so lucky to have the support of all these wonderful folks, especially during the past 7 months. Thank you, volunteers and staff!

We our volunteers! Recently, through our partnership with the Center for Land Based Learning, we were able to offer our volunteers some fresh-from-the-field melons and cucumbers to enjoy to help us express our thanks. Our thanks to our great friends at CLBL and to our wonderful volunteers who have continued delivering meals through a global pandemic and now, a dangerous fire season.

We are so fortunate; we received a grant for $12,000 to completely fund our Weekend Food Project program for an entire year! Big thanks to the employees of Bayer Woodland for recommending us to corporate for this grant! It will pay for the groceries for 2,000 bags of food to help our most needy clients over the last weekend of each month. Thank you, Bayer!

In most cultures, when a dragonfly lands on you and rests there for a bit, it is a symbol of good luck; It also symbolizes change, transformation, self-realization and adaptability. This dragonfly was on one of our delivery vehicles this morning. Perhaps it recognizes the very bumpy and changing road we have been on for the past 5 months and stopped by to offer us support and encouragement?
