We are not in the clear yet! Nearly 300 days after the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fires started, impacted areas still contain active fire hazards. During this p...ast week, CalFire responded to the Pine Fire which burned 3.7 acres of old-growth redwood forest. CalFire identified 11 additional hot spots and responded to a separate 11.5 acre fire within Big Basin. Please respect park closures for your own safety and to allow this sensitive habitat to recover. Photos courtesy of Steve Keuhl. @slvsteve

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank everyone for keeping our beloved Parks in their thoughts and prayers. Several of our Board Members and employees live up in the San Lorenzo Valley and have been evacuated. Our office and store at Henry Cowell Redwoods SP has been closed and critical items removed. The devastation that you have seen at Big Basin has really hit us hard and we are in a waiting mode to see where the fire is headed and what the weather does tonight and tomorrow. Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes. The only good news is that the Redwoods will survive this and that the Park will someday be rebuilt. Thanks, Larry Tierney, Board Member.

To reduce the threat of severe wildfires, we need to act on climate change, protect and restore our forests, and learn to live with good fire.

There's work to be done in our forests, so much so that forestry could be the backbone of a new green economy. We spoke to some of the people out there working in the redwoods of northern California to get their perspectives on the important work they do.
