Congratulations to SJSU/MLML Ichthyology Lab alumna Devona Yates on the recent publication of her thesis research in the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series! Devona’s paper examines the effects of marine reserves on predator-prey interactions in central California kelp forests. Applications for the MLML Master’s of Science in Marine Science program are officially open for fall 2021! Moss Landing Marine Laboratories is a consortium of seven California State University campuses administered by San Jose State University dedicated to excellence in both education and research. An outfitted marine operations department, active research diving program, and state of the art equipment and instrumentation allow for cutting edge research in a wide variety ...of disciplines including: marine ecology; the biology of marine plants, invertebrates, fishes, turtles, birds, and mammals; oceanography and marine geology; and chemistry and biogeochemistry. MLML's program is internationally-known for its hands-on, field-oriented approach that places our students, faculty, researchers, and staff at the frontiers of marine science, where discoveries are being made worldwide. Congrats to SJSU/MLML research faculty member Dr. David Ebert of the Pacific Shark Research Center on the publication of his latest book, titled Field Guide to Sharks, Rays & Chimaeras of Europe and the Mediterranean. The guide was published this week by Princeton University Press and features comprehensive descriptions and illustrations of all 146 species of sharks, rays, and chimaeras found in the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea.
We are thrilled to announce that grad student June Shrestha will be defending her master’s thesis tomorrow! June’s research through the SJSU/MLML Ichthyology Lab focuses on the role of fish pee as a nutrient source in California kelp forests. Huge congratulations to SJSU/MLML Phycology Lab alumna Dr. Rosemary Romero who was named Naturalist of the Year at the Western Society of Naturalists Annual Meeting #WSN2020! The Naturalist of the Year award recognizes unsung heroes in the science education field who define our future by inspiring young people with the wonders and sheer joy of natural history. Congrats, Rosemary!

Congratulations to SJSU/MLML alumna Sharon Hsu on her new job as a right whale aerial observer with the Center for Coastal Studies! Sharon received her MS in Marine Science from SJSU/MLML in 2020. Her thesis research in Dr. Gitte McDonald's Vertebrate Ecology Lab focused on stable isotope analysis in leatherback sea turtles.

This prestigious award provides $100,000 in unrestricted funds to support individual scientists, elevate their diverse perspectives, and enable them to commit time to observation and experimentation. Tomorrow evening the American Cetacean Society - San Francisco Bay Chapter will be hosting a free virtual talk presented by MLML alumna Nancy Black! Nancy received her MS in Marine Science from MLML in 1994 and is the owner of local whale watching tour company Monterey Bay Whale Watch. Through her talk titled Behavior and ecology of killer whales in Monterey Bay over the last 30 years, Nancy will share some of her vast knowledge of our local killer whale population.
