Quick daily update. Thanks to Greg May for today’s pic! Well, we are less than 100 days away from election day. The Orwellian descriptions of our ballot choice...s has already begun. For example, the November ballot will have two propositions that will drastically change our economic and safety landscape, but you’d never know it based on the ballot titles written by CA Attorney General Xavier Becerra. Prop 15, for example, will increase taxes by an estimated $10 Billion+ each year. It guts Prop 13 for commercial properties and opens the door to attacking residential protections. In one of the worst economic moments in our state’s history when businesses are closing or barely surviving as it is this tone-deaf split-roll attack drives up rent that will show up in the prices that we all pay. But what is Prop 15’s ballot title? Increases Funding for Public Schools, Community Colleges, and Local Government Services by Changing Tax Assessment of Commercial and Industrial Property. Perhaps the better description would be: Making California even less affordable so that kids educated here will be better trained for the jobs chased away to Texas. Or take Prop 20. I noted on Monday that California allows felons to get out of jail sooner if they qualify as non-violent. But non-violent in California includes crimes like assault with a deadly weapon, solicitation to commit murder, rape of an unconscious person, taking a hostage, false imprisonment by violence, hate crime causing physical injury, etc. So Prop 20 is designed to designate specific crimes as violent and prohibit violent felons from early release. But Becerra’s ballot title is: Restricts Parole for Non-Violent Offenders. Authorizes Felony Sentences for Certain Offenses Currently Treated Only as Misdemeanors. Only in Becerra’s California could rape of an unconscious person be called non-violent. My strong suggestion is to ignore the ballot titles and summaries completely when you vote. Do your homework. You are a lot smarter than our state government gives you credit for.
