Tip for the week In this world of instant - have to have it now... somethings still take time. When ordering a printed project, and it needs design, you need to allow time for design, proofing (revisions), printing, and bindery. Depending on the size of project ie book with more than 16 pages or more, you should allow a minimum 1 to 2 weeks, because most of us know that if it is an event book like a church anniversary with ads or a family reunion book - pictures, there are go...ing to be some of us that will push that deadline that was given to us... which in turn will push your designer, and in turn push the start of the printing process and finally the bindery... which will cost you more money, because of overtime hours to get your project done on time. Understand that machines only run so fast... Never try to print on your home printer... 200 copies? Well print companies are faster, but the machines still take time to process and run the files... There are printers that specialize in certain type of printing needs, and because that is the core of what they do everyday, they can get the project out faster....(like Morgan's- Memorial Keepsakes - normally 2 to 3 days sometimes same day depending on size of Keepsake) However understand that if you design your own project and submit your files for printing only, that will cut the time you need, yet you should still allow time a day 1/2, just in case your files are missing something or are not set up properly... Remember to also check early with your printer for their work load... so you can be placed on their production schedule. Helping them not to over book and get your project done on time. This is why it is a good ideal to call ahead... and if you schedule and change your mind, no problem - just please let them know... so that they may open up that space for someone else.... In closing, the bottom line is: allowing enough time will not only save you money.... it will also give you enough time to proof and make any revisions before the project goes to print.... Luv Ya...Shell
When calling a print shop for a price quote there is some base info you need to let the printer know... 1) is the info already designed, what size, how many pages... If not design then, how many photos, approx. how long is the obit (1 page, 2 or 3 pages), do you have poems, tributes how long are they,... Until your printer sees the info you want to include in the Memorial keepsake or any printed project, they will not be able to give you an exact price quote... Because they w...on't know much work is going to be needed. Also how many do you want printed... It is like walking into a book store and saying I want to buy a book? Okay, I have tons of books, do you want children, history, novels, fairytale? What type of book do you want??? Going to a restaurant and telling the waiter that you want a steak... what type of steak.... T-bone, Filet Mignon, cooked how? This is why most printers will only give you an estimate until they see all info and work ... and some of you will still come in with one thing and then think you can add more into the project, and believe the price will not go up... that is like you working overtime and not getting paid for it.... ummmmmmmmmm - but I love my people.... lol See more

DO IT YOURSELF DESIGNER'S - TIP FOR THE MONTH Understanding the mean of full bleed trim on printed items. When designing your on item for example an 11x8.5 / finished size when folded 5.5x8.5 = with color all the way to edge of the page & sending it to a professional printer you must leave what is called a bleed trim meaning - you want the color to go all the way to edge of the page Then start with your page layout - size at 11.25 x 8.75 - (1/4" to 1/2" LARGER) this will le...ave enough room for the printer to cut the page down = leaving color all the way to the edge of the page WITHOUT ANY WHITE BORDER... DO NOT PLACE ANY TYPE OR PICTURE ITEM(S) IN THIS 1/4" or 1/2" AREA UNLESS YOU WANT IT TO BE CUT-OFF - your printer WILL USE OVERSIZE STOCK- SO THAT YOUR FINISH SIZE IS 11X8.5.... WHICH WILL COST MORE... Sometimes, a printer will short the finish size to save on stock cost... but you will still paid for that bleed trim (cutting) UNDERSTAND - that no professional printer - prints color all the way to edge of the sheet like your home printer may do... there are other technical mechanics in involved with professional printers... Hope this tip helps some of the do it yourself designers out there... If all of this seem a little confusing to you... then consider letting Morgan's design your next project...for that just right professional look... COME BACK NEXT MONTH TO CHECK THE NEXT TIP OUT...
