She asks us to join her on Friday, September 25, at 6 pm west coast, 9 pm east coast, in front of our homes to ring a bell for our 200,000 Covid-19 victims and their family, friends and loved ones. Will you join me? - No man is an island, Entire of itself. (John Donne, For whom the Bell Tolls)... Today marks the 200.000 death of an American to this Corona pandemic and there is no end in sight. I am sitting at my kitchen table feeling depleted and devastated. Like many of my physician colleagues, I struggle with what more can I do to help or change the course of this freight train of a virus that seems to anticipate our moves like an expert chess player. Just when it feels we have some solid framework to work from, it liquifies and seeps through our fingers. 200.000 deaths. As a doctor, I know the heavy weight of my patients’ grief, as a mother I imagine the crushing pain of parents losing children, as a daughter I know the suffering of saying good bye to a parent. They say that every death on average leaves 9 humans close to the deceased grieving. This means we have millions of friends, colleagues, neighbors grieving for somebody they loved. Could a momentous outpouring of kindness provide solace to the incredible number of humans touched by this pandemic? As a gift of kindness and compassion, I would like to ask all of you to give a moment or your time to those millions who are grieving. To show them that we think of them, that we feel for our friends, our neighbors, our fellow citizens, that we can bridge no matter what may divide us and say for a brief moment: I care. This demonstration won't cure anyone or bring anyone back whom we have lost, but, by taking time out of our lives to remember, we show compassion. Sometimes, as physicians, that is our most important treatment. I’ve decided: even though I might be all alone, even though I might feel self conscious - on Friday, September 25, at 6 pm west coast, 9 pm east coast, I will step in front of my house and will ring a bell for our 200.000 victims and their family, friends and loved ones.
