Agave kavandivi is a recently discovered species, still relatively rare in collections. A pretty, small plant, it forms a 12" x 12" rosette with spiky, pale blu...e leaves that are finely toothed along the margins. Its specific name refers to Cerro Kava Ndivi, the mountain on which it occurs. The mountain's name translates to cliff of the turtledove. (11/5/2020) See more

Gasteria 'Little Warty' is a hybrid of two South AfricanGasteria batesiania and Gasteria cv. Old Man Silver. A small plant that clumps easily and is nearly stem...less (acaulescent), it has white and green leaves described as having "raised pale silvery-green or pale olive-green stripes and edge with lots of pearly tubercles (warts) in the upper and undersides." These characteristics make it attractive to collectors. (11/3/2020) See more

The Quasimoto Agave (Agave 'Cornelius') forms an attractive 18" tall rosette with strongly variegated yellow and green leaves with undulating margins. It grows ...slowly to just 18" tall, and produces offsets freely, creating close-in plant colonies. This native of Mexico has had several different names, including A. americana 'Marginata Aurea Monstrosa'. (10/28/2020) See more

Haworthia fasciata 'Royal Albert', a small Aloe relative, native to South Africa. It grows 4" wide, 6" tall, with black-green leaves having raised white marks o...n the surface. It has unimpressive small white flowers in early spring. One photo shows a darker plant that has had greater sun exposure. Compare this cultivar with H. fasciata attenuata in the previous post as different examples of the same species. (10/26/2020) See more

The White-striped Century Plant (Agave americana var. medio-picta 'Alba), a native of Mexico, grows 3-4' high and 4-6' wide, with green leaves boldly variegated... with a greenish-cream central stripe and blue-green margins. The young specimen shown here, 18" wide, will add considerable size and, after ten years of growth, produce a tall flower spike with yellow-green blooms, and then die (it is already producing offsets). It could outgrow its space before reaching full size, but wise advice is to not remove it with a chainsaw that could splatter caustic sap. (10/20/2020) See more

Queen of White Thread-leaf Agave (Agave schidigera 'Shira ito no Ohi'), a Mexican native, grows slowly to a compact 1' x1' rosette. Its dark green leaves have ...margins highlighted with creamy-white variegation and curly white hairs. When mature, it can produce red-purple buds and greenish flowers on a 10' spike. This specimen could be a Medusa's Head (Euphorbia Caput-Medusae). Updated ID: This is E. mammillaris, a variant of a plant featured recently here. This is a Sou...th African succulent plant about 1' wide and 8" tall. Its redness suggests some stress resulting from either a recent hot spell or insufficient moisture. In any case, it is an attractive plant that is growing well enough to produce several branches. (10/6/2020) See more

The Butterfly Agave (Agave potatorum spp.) compares with the smaller Agave potatorum 'Cubic', featured here a month ago for its unique leaf formation. Today's f...eatured Agave develops 10' long leaves with chestnut brown marginal spines and a slightly wavy terminal spine. When about 10 years old, its flower spike will rise 10+' high with light green flowers tinged with red. It will then produce offsets and die. Mexico's Nauhuatl Indians called this plant "papalometl," which means "butterfly. (9/21/2020) See more

The Dragon Toes Agave (Agave pygmae ‘Dragon Toes’), a hybrid dwarf blue agave, grows just 12" x 12" with soft-looking grey/green chunky thick leaves with distin...ct red speckle imprints, adding drama to this Mexican native for small gardens and containers. It thrives in full sun in moderate climates; prefers light shade in hotter areas. (9/19/2020) See more

The Spanish Bayonet (Yucca desmetiana 'Blue Boy'), a member of the Agave family, has soft, arching, smooth-edged green leaves with an unusual dusky purple blush.... It grows 46' tall and 35' wide and is an attractive subject for a large container. This rare cultivar is a hybrid form of Y. desmetiana, a native of Mexico.
