Surf, we are thinking a club movie night for a great cause. Let's get the Surf families to all rally around our firefighters!
Today we were one of many organizations to co-write a letter to Governor Newsom asking for clarifications on when youth sports can continue playing in a safe ma...nner. Here is the letter. We’re asking that parents, clubs, and coaches do the same with their local governments so we can have a better understanding of when we can return to playing. Or join in on the conversation on social media by using #safereturntoplay See more
In many ways, soccer is just a laboratory to practice life. How are you approaching it? How are you being encouraged to approach it? Avoid Fear/Uncomfortableness and maintain the status quo Or Engage it, manage it and evolve?... In soccer, the Avoidance Mechanisms include: No accountability for players (attend/don't attend is overridden by "talent") No accountability for instructors (to adhere to a defined and measurable curriculum). No objective metrics. Evaluations are purely subjective so they can never be 3rd party verified. Lots of shadows to hide in for the coach. Play the same position repeatedly or "when it really matters". This is fear/discomfort avoidance. You come to learn this is the polar opposite of fear/ discomfort engagement and management. Focus on the easier skills (to learn & teach): Defense over Offense- always easier to destroy than create. Easier to win from pressuring others mistakes, especially early, than to build a complete player that will likely include losses while working through skills and concepts Passing over Dribbling- the final player can do both, but dribbling is the more rare skill and it takes much longer to learn and develop. Most coaches either skip it (too hard for them to teach or mistakenly put the harder, longer skills to learn at the end when there is not enough time to learn. The end result is a player who may be 90% probable to pass and 10% probable to dribble. This means you are also 90% predictable. Plus most teach passing poorly from a decision making standpoint. You know this if you've ever watched a soccer game that resembles a tennis match. Choose your schools or clubs that put into practice the values you want learned. Too often we see people that agree life lessons are some of the best attributes of youth sports, then choose organizations displaying and practicing the qualities above daily. For many parents they are still learning the sport. Our goal is to help you make educated decisions. You know what values you would like taught and emulated. Part of our job is to help you identify the soccer manifestations of those or opposite values.
If it were easy, everyone could do it.
Great example from a friend for kids wanting to do a little more at home.
Thank you Coaches for all the countless hours you put in to help our kids improve in the game they love.

The courage to give everything you have both physically and emotionally makes you vulnerable and that kind of vulnerability is a good thing!!
