On this date 2 years ago, 65 blue whales showed up in Monterey Bay, joined by nearly 100 other whales, including fin whales and the humpbacks (shown here). This... event lasted for nearly 3 weeks in what is still the largest gathering of whales and dolphins (thousands of them) I have ever witnessed. These are the last few days of the spring, summer, and fall feeding season before most of these giants will find themselves south in much warmer waters where they will mate and give birth to live young. There are still loads of hungry whales in the bay now and who knows how many will show up over the next few days! See more
