174 years ago on the morning of January 9th, after the Battle of Rio San Gabriel, the bodies of Seaman Frederick Strauss, USS Portsmouth, who was killed in action and Volunteer Artillery Driver Jacob Hait, who died of his wounds, were wrapped in their blankets and both laid in the same grave side by side with a small wooden cross on the west bank of the river. A few hours after the Americans have left, they were dug up and stripped of their clothing by the enemy. Fortunately some American visited the spot in the evening and again buried them.
