We've kept the health and well-being of animals at the forefront of everything we do, and our customers trust us to keep on doing the right thing. Modesto Milling was established in 1974 as a Dairymen’s Co-operative. In 1997, a group of local dairymen convinced the Board of Directors to start manufacturing organic dairy grain mixes. By January 1998, Modesto Milling gained its organic certification from Oregon Tilth of Salem, Ore. It was the first organic grain processor in Central California. Modesto Milling processed conventional and organic feed until August 2007, when the Board of Directors voted to convert the mill’s manufacturing to 100% organic feed. #TBT

The biggest hurdle for raising chickens in January isn't necessarily just the cold weather Wind chills are what can cause the biggest distress to your birds if they don't have the right amount of protection, both in and out of the coop. Make sure your coop is draft-free, and provide something to obstruct the wind outside of the coop for them to shelter by when they do go outside.

Here at Modesto Milling, organic feed is a party of our family heritage! All of our formulations are overseen by Chris Wagner, whose feed formulation roots go back three generations. Chris' grandfather, Clarence, (pictured above) settled in Petaluma, CA in the 1900s. He started off raising poultry and mixing his own feed and later began raising chinchillas and selling animals, supplies, and four feed formulations he had manufactured at a local mill. Chris remembers selling fe...ed for his grandfather every weekend, starting around the age of 11 or 12. The legacy continued with Chris' father, who was known for raising award-winning sheep and rams and mixing his own feed ingredients for optimal show performance. Today, Chris has expanded upon this feed heritage and worked to build the trusted Modesto Milling brand and feed product you (and your animals!) know and love. Did you know? The sound a goat makes is called "bleating," and much like us, they use it to communicate different emotions with each other. Each baby goat, or "kid," has a distinct bleating call that their mother can immediately recognize.

Looking for a better way to reduce rodents in your coop? We always recommend a feeding system like the Grandpa Feeder, a contraption which helps control the feeding process while also protecting the feed from unwanted pests. It's easy to teach your chickens to eat from the Grandpa Feeder! Watch this video to learn more about how it works!

During molting season, you should limit your chickens intake of scratch, as it's too low in protein. Chickens need additional protein to help them recover from molting. Chick starter is high in protein and can be beneficial for chickens during molting. Use as a complete feed chick starter and grower for all poultry chicks up to 16 weeks of age before switching to a layer feed.

Tip- If the heat level in your brooder is good, chicks will spread out evenly around their brooder. If chicks are too hot they will pant. If chicks are too cold they will huddle directly under the heat lamp and become noisy. Make sure you are checking on your new chicks frequently and adjusting heat source accordingly. #TuesdayTips
