Merry Christmas from the MFD family to yours. We hope you have a safe and healthy holiday season!
Just before 10 pm last night, Modesto Fire Department and Ceres Fire crews responded to the 1000 Block of Carpenter Road for the report of a working commercial structure fire. The first unit on scene reported a single story commercial building with light smoke coming from a closed roll up door. Crews made access to the building and found that there was a fire burning in the back of a van parked in the building. The fire was extinguished and... other areas of the building were checked for fire extension. The fire was isolated to the van. No injuries resulted from the fire and the Stanislaus County FIU is conducting the investigation. See more

Just before 3 a.m. this morning, Modesto and Ceres Fire units responded to a commercial structure fire in the 400 block of a Jefferson Street, in downtown Modesto. Upon arrival, a well involved single story commercial building was found, threatening nearby businesses. Fire crews worked in the defensive mode to contain the fire. With the assistance of Modesto Police Department and the Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit, 59-year-old transient David Riccio was arrested and charged for one count of setting fire to vegetation at the Tuolumne River Regional Park in South Modesto on Sunday evening. Two separate fires had been reported between 8 and 9 PM on Sunday, but it is unknown if both fires were set by Riccio. Throughout the summer, there have been several small fires set at the park causing concern. The Modesto Fire Department has recently focused their attention on clearing brush and debris from the park to prevent a larger fire from occurring in the area. As a reminder, please stay alert and if you see anyone creating a fire hazard, please contact dispatch at 209-552-2470
