Big Bear Lake puts teeth in mask mandate By Judi Bowers [email protected] Feb 10, 2021 12:00 AM... Don't leave home without a mask if you are going to be in the city of Big Bear Lake. And make sure you wear said mask or face covering or it could cost you maybe. The Big Bear Lake City Council voted 4-1 to approve an emergency order making face coverings mandatory within the city limits. CITY COUNCIL ADOPTS MASK ORDER In an effort to further emphasize the need for ALL of our residents, businesses, and visitors to wear face coverings, City Council adopted a formal mask order at its meeting last night. The new order was adopted in recognition of the continuing threat posed by COVID-19 and the need for our community to remain vigilant in efforts to discourage the spread. Under the new order, violators may be subject to a $500 City citation. Additionally, individuals who defy the mask order and refuse to leave a City business face arrest and stiffer State penalties. Under the new order, the use of face coverings is required by all persons in Big Bear Lake whenever such persons are within 6 feet of others who are not members of the same household, in both indoor and outdoor settings. Exceptions apply for young children, the act of eating or drinking, personal services requiring access to the nose and mouth, bona fide medical conditions, situations involving hearing impaired individuals where it is necessary to view the mouth for communication, and situations where the face covering presents a safety concern associated with the individual’s work. The new order also requires all persons to carry a face covering with them at all times, and to implement the face covering when coming within 6 feet of others. PLEASE do your part, and wear a face covering!

BBMWD says: We received an excellent question regarding our watershed. Question is If the Big Bear Lake watershed receives 1’’ of water (rain or melted snow), approximately how much does that raise the Lake depth once it runs into the Lake? We have 72 square miles of watershed in Big Bear Valley. Approximately 42 square miles flows into Big Bear Lake, the balance goes east. 1’’ of precipitation within the 42 square miles falling into Big Bear Lake the 1’’ that falls directl...y on the Lake raises it by 1’’. The balance that is left in the watershed as snow or ground water makes this highly variable. If we receive rain right after the storm we receive a high percentage of runoff into the Lake. If Mother Nature slowly warms up and slowly melts that snow we get a much smaller portion of that back. Sometimes almost zero. The two storms that we received in the last week raised the Lake 2’’. Lets hope for some more. The Lake is currently 13’ 0’’ down from full. We have a long way to go. See more

Bensweather.com Forecast Updated: Thursday, Jan 28 @ 10:27am *** WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT 3PM THURSDAY THROUGH 3PM FRIDAY *** A major winter storm continues to drench central and northern California with some areas receiving over a foot of rain and near 8 feet of snow! We are still expecting significant precipitation across southern California, but not quite to that extent. Clouds and winds will continue to increase throughout the day today with scattered showers possib...le this afternoon, snow level around 6,000ft. Cold and windy with highs in the 40's as south to southwest winds gusting as high as 40mph. The plume of moisture streaming in off the Pacific will drop south and should arrive in our area by tonight with locally heavy snowfall through Friday morning. The snow level will lower to around 4,500 feet with accumulations of 1-2 feet expected, isolated higher amounts are possible, mainly across the higher terrain/resort level. Snowfall intensity should decrease by mid-morning Friday with scattered snow showers continuing throughout the day, an isolated thunderstorm is also possible. The good news is we'll get a break over the weekend giving us a chance to dig out from whatever Mother nature delivers, the bad news is we could be in for another significant winter storm by the middle of next week. (It's actually good news too, we need the precip!). Expect highs in the 30's Friday and Saturday, warming to the 40's Sunday and Monday, while overnight lows remain in the teens and 20's. At this time, the next storm is forecast to arrive sometime Tuesday into Wednesday, it will be a colder system, but exact details are TBD at this time; early indications are that it could be another pretty major winter storm. Traveling into the mountains is highly discouraged on Friday, if you must, check ahead and be prepared for road closures. Weather conditions can and will change rapidly in the mountains with whiteout/blizzard conditions expected Thursday night and Friday. Always carry extra food, water, and warm clothing in the event you become stranded and carry tire chains! See more

WINTER STORM WATCH The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the San Bernardino County Mountains. The watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon for elevations above 5000 feet. ** HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED ** Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, with localized amounts over 24 inches (2 FEET), are possible. This combined with significant snow already on the ground could cause greater impact. Severe travel disruptions with treac...herous driving conditions above 5000 feet. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. CARRY CHAINS as they will be required for travel in the mountains. A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts on this strong winter storm.
