DNA Day this year was on April 25, 2021. DNA Day is a day dedicated to educating the world about the concept of genetics and genomics. DNA Day commemorates the day in 1953 when James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal Nature on the structure of DNA.... DNA is a molecule that carries coded information and is found in all living cells. DNA defines how an organism looks and behaves. Therefore, diseases can develop if there have been damages or mutations caused to the DNA. DNA tests are widely used by scientists and doctors to predict hereditary medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s disease. DNA Day also aims to bring awareness to the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. The Human Genome Project was an international research project to determine the DNA sequence of the entire human genome. Now, it is far more affordable to sequence a human genome. This means medical professionals can have exact knowledge of a particular person’s genes and their mutations, and medical treatments can be personalized to each person. #mari_misdiagnosis #dnaday #dna #science #mutations #genomics #genomes #humangenome

Neuroblastoma is a cancerous tumour. It grows in nerve tissues of babies and young children, but can spread to other organs. It is caused by changes in the DNA of cells. In most cases, this happens by chance, but a small number of children inherit it from their parents. This cancer commonly affects babies under the age of 1 and is said to be rare in children above the age of 10. Symptoms vary depending on the size and location of the tumour, and how much the tumour has spr...ead. If the tumour is in the chest region then headaches, dizziness, coughing, swelling of the face and a lump in the chest can result. If the tumour is in the abdomen region, then symptoms can include loss of appetite, swelling of the abdomen, legs and scrotum as well as a lump in the abdomen. This cancer can spread and cause enlarged lymph nodes, lumps in the head, bruising and bleeding as well as extreme weakness. Multiple tests are conducted to determine a diagnosis. This includes blood and urine samples, ultrasounds, X-rays and MRIs. Bone marrow and tumour biopsy must also be done to collect samples to state that the cancer is neuroblastoma. Treatments vary from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. #mari_misdiagnosis #neuroblastoma #cancer #malignant #tumour #medicine #MARI #children

Childhood Arthritis Month Arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterized by pain, swelling and tenderness of the joints between bones. Kids can get many different types of arthritis, but juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common one. The cause of JIA is unknown. Something in the environment, like a virus, may trigger the disease in kids that already have certain genes that make it more likely for them to get it. Generally, the symptoms in children can go unnoti...ced, but significant ones include stiffness of the body and difficulty moving limbs. The arthritis can cause permanent physical damage to joints, making it hard for the child to do everyday things. Childhood arthritis is diagnosed through a physical examination and review of symptoms, X-rays, and lab tests. It is important that children with arthritis keep their joints moving to strengthen their muscles. In spite of their diagnosis, most children with arthritis can expect to live normal lives.Although there is no cure, some children with arthritis achieve permanent remission. This means the disease is no longer active. However, any physical damage to the joint will remain. #mari_misdiagnosis #healthcare #health #lifestyle #arthritis #juvenilearthritis #childhoodarthrtismonth #medicine #mari

High blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of kidney failure results in an increased risk of developing kidney disease. However, if you don’t experience any of those risk categories it’s still important to take care of kidneys since they are critically important organs. Here are some tips you can do to keep your kidneys as healthy as possible: Regulate the body’s fluid levels: Regular, consistent water intake is healthy for kidneys. Water lowers your risk of chronic ...kidney disease by helping to clear sodium and toxins from your kidneys. Keep active and fit: Exercise can lower the risk of chronic kidney disease as well as reduce blood pressure and boost heart health, which are both important to preventing kidney damage. Eat a healthy diet: Diets that prevent diabetes and high blood pressure can help keep kidneys in good condition. If at risk, you should get regular kidney function screening: If you are experiencing diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular disease, your physician should screen for kidney dysfunction as part of routine care. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/7-secrets-to-keeping-yo/ #mari_misdiagnosis

Kidney stones, or renal calculi, are solid masses made of crystals that usually originate in your kidneys. Diet, excess body weight, some medical conditions, and certain supplements and medications are among the many causes of kidney stones. Common symptoms of kidney stones include sharp, cramping pain in the back and side. This pain often moves to the lower abdomen or groin. Treatment depends on the type of stone, how severe it is, and the length of time symptoms was experi...enced. The followings are different treatments to choose from: 1) Medication: Certain medications have been shown to improve the chance that a stone will pass. The most common medication prescribed for this reason is tamsulosin. 2) Surgery: it may be needed to remove a stone from the kidney if the stone fails to pass, it is affecting kidney function, or the pain is too much to wait for the stone to pass by itself. 3) Waiting for the stone to pass by itself: Often you can simply wait for around 4-6 weeks for the stone to pass. Smaller stones are more likely than larger stones to pass on their own. https://www.mayoclinic.org///symptoms-causes/syc-20355755 #mari_misdiagnosis #KidneyDisease #kidney #kidneystones

In the corona virus pandemic we must wear our face masks in order to protect ourselves, however, we are starting to contaminate our environment through this protection. We throw our masks on the streets or anywhere that is convenient to us and by doing so, we have endangered our environment. Each mask has its own story and we want to tell their stories through your photographs. The intensive care unit and the critical care unit are not synonymous terms. The intensive care unit (ICU) is an area within an acute care hospital or setting that provides constant care to those who have relatively short term, but serious problems like organ failure. A team of general surgeons and doctors along with other hospital staff look after the patient in the intensive care units. CCU stands for Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit, or Critical Care Unit. CCU is a ...specialized ICU that mainly deals with cardiac patients and is usually staffed by a team of heart specialist surgeons and physicians. The critical care unit provides intensive care for the patient who have been admitted because of a serious cardiac condition such as heart attack, heart complications. In general, the ICU is more general provides high-level care for patients with a variety of serious illnesses while the CCU is mainly for patients with cardiac (heart) disorders. #mari_misdiagnosis #icu #icunurses #ccu #ccunurses #ccudoctors #hospital #care #corona #covid_19 #physician #medicine #misdiagnosed #difference See more

What Is Critical Care? Critical care is services provided by healthcare professionals to patients who are facing immediate, life-threatening conditions that require constant monitoring and are usually putting strain on vital organ systems. These services are usually done in the intensive care units by groups of healthcare professionals including doctors and nurses, and these ICUs can vary for adults and pediatrics. ... Critical care plays a huge role in hospitals and it is important that these teams and units do not get overwhelmed so as to prevent long wait times and backlog of cases. Common roles within the ICU are the Medical Director, providing oversight with respect to patients’ conditions as well as administrative activities, the Unit Manager, who oversees operational activities in the unit, such as staffing and budgeting; and the Most Responsible Physician (MRP), who is the individual who is primarily responsible for a specific patient’s care. These health care professionals work around the clock to save the lives of critically ill patients. https://www.criticalcareontario.ca//What-is-Critical-Care. #mari_misdiagnosis #healthcare #doctors #nurses #ICU #criticalcare #medicine #health #lifestyle

Canadian Intensive Care Week October 25th to October 31st is Canadian Intensive Care Week! This is a week to show appreciation for the hardworking people who contribute to the Intensive Care Units across Canada, be it nurses, doctors, or other ICU experts and staff, they put their best effort forth to help those who need it! ... Did you know each year over 100 000 Canadians receive life-saving care in Intensive Care Units? (https://caccn.ca/events/canadian-intensive-care-week/). The intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital is where patients facing an immediate life-threatening health condition are admitted. Specifically, health conditions that involve a vital organ such as the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, or the nervous system being affected, for instance: Cardio-vascular incidents (heart attacks or strokes) Severe Infections Acute Respiratory Infections Neurological problems Post-Operative Care Complications Most ICUs are large sterilized areas with a high number of specialized, technical, and monitoring equipment needed to care for critically ill patients. Services in ICU are provided by specifically trained staff consisting of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical nursing, etc to maintain organ system functioning and improve patients’ conditions such that their underlying injury or illness can then be treated. According to the European society of intensive care medicine, about 5 million adults worldwide are admitted to intensive care units per year. The majority of these patients survive as a result of receiving intensive and specialized medical and nursing care. #intensivecare #intensivecareunit #medicine #medicalworker #mari_misdiagnosis #hospitals #icu #patients #corona #covid_19 #covid

Here are some suggestions regarding the photography. 1)LIGHTING Make sure you have good lighting; you don’t need studio lighting to get a nice photo, just make sure there is enough natural lighting. The light should hit the object from above, the side or the front, not from the back. Make sure the photographs aren’t being taken at night. 2)SUBJECT Our focus for this project is the mask and the environment it is being thrown in. Make sure in your photographs the mask is the ma...in subject and nothing is distracting it in the photo. We want to bring the attention to the mask and the story behind it. 3)COMPOSITION We want your style of photography to come through, and the way you view the mask and its story so composition is open; Get as creative as possible. Some things to keep in mind are to make sure your mask is fully seen in the image and if its not make sure it is done with purpose. 4)SUBMISSION From October 21st to October 31st you have time to gather your photographs. Photos Don’t need to be edited, just send them as JPGS. From October 31st to November 4th you have time to submit them to the MARI Media Team through this email. #mari_misdiagnosis #competition #photography #photo #masks #masksforsale #medicine #covid19 #pandemic #pandemiclife

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that causes an individual to interpret reality in an abnormal way. The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Dis...orders version 5) describes some of the symptoms that match the criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia as the following: Delusions Hallucinations Disorganized speech Grossly disorganized or catatonic (ie. symptoms with lack of movement) behavior Generally, schizophrenia is uncommon in children and it’s onset usually begins in the 20s for most people. For teenagers, the same symptoms may be present but with less of a likelihood for delusions but a greater likelihood for hallucinations. The causes of this disorder are not fully known yet but genetics (such as a family history of schizophrenia), altered brain chemistry (sometimes due to drug use in teen years or pregnancy complications) and the environment can all play a role in the onset of schizophrenia. The disorder can lead to other complications and disorders such as depression, suicidal tendencies, anxiety, etc. There is no prevention for this disorder but if an individual is experiencing any of the symptoms it is important to get medical help as soon as possible. Help can include getting treatments such as antipsychotic drugs, therapy, support groups, etc. that can aid in the improvement of an individual’s condition. #mari_misdiagnosis #schizophrenia #mentalhealth #suicideawareness #mentalhealthawareness #disease #disorder #healthcare #health #wellbeing #lifestyle
