#MedalofHonorMonday: U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. James Dyess was known as a great marksman in college. His skills translated well to the battlefield in the Pacif...ic during #WWII. The battalion commander didn't shy away from danger when it came to leading his troops. For that leadership and valor, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is his story: https://go.usa.gov/xAFrV. #KnowYourMil

From Sam Hobbs November 10, 2016 : Today is the anniversary of the foundation of United States Marine Corps which was formed on November 10, 1775. Fittingly enough, once the Corps was established, it immediately began a recruiting drive in Tun Tavern. . From Wikipedia: "The United States Marine Corps traces its institutional roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War, formed by Captain Samuel Nicholas by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress ...on 10 November 1775, to raise two battalions of Marines. That date is regarded and celebrated as the date of the Marine Corps' birthday. At the end of the American Revolution, both the Continental Navy and Continental Marines were disbanded in April 1783. The institution itself would not be resurrected until 11 July 1798. . Also from Wikipedia: "The three primary areas of responsibility of the USMC are: - The seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns; - The development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing forces in coordination with the Army and Air Force; and - Such other duties as the President may direct." . I cannot begin to address the history or the significance of the USMC to the national defense of the United States in a paragraph or two. . However, I offer my respect and a salute to all Marines, those deceased and those still with us. Though I cannot claim to be a brother in arms to that proud force, as a former sailor, I am proud to call myself a "cousin in arms" .
