A Trio from Nestarec! Milan Nestarec from the Czech Republic is a natural wine wunderkind whose wines have become nearly impossible to get. We snagged a few from his just-released ‘Youngster Series’--white, rosé and red. All are youthful, pure and quaffable, meant to be chilled (red included), and drunk immediately. And those labels!! Each year Milan makes new ones inspired by the faces of his friends. Not to put words in your mouth, but we think they’re excellent predictors ...of your reactions. Youngster White 2020 $32 Riesling, Neuberger, Pinot Gris. Vibrant, lip-smacking medley of gooseberry, kiwi, and lemon, with a slight effervescence. Youngster Rosé 2020 $32 Direct press rosé of Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt. A juicy dollop of strawberry preserves cut with the bright acidity of rhubarb. Youngster Red 2020 $32 Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Dornfelder. Smooth and ripe but not heavy, with red and black plums, notes of tobacco and cassis. Fattoria Mani di Luna is the labor of love of three long-time friends who took over a farm & vineyards in the hills of Torgiano (Umbria), where viticulture dates back to the Etruscans. They cultivate the vines according to rigorous biodynamic farming practices, and make wine as naturally and traditionally as possible. Rustic and raw, the wines express the Umbrian countryside, while also being super easy and fun to drink. Today’s trio features three of our favorites from the e...state! Glu Glu Pét-Nat 2019 $28 A lively, funky pét-nat of Trebbiano Toscano (Procanico), with a touch of Malvasia and Grechetto. Juicy yellow fruits, herbal accents, and a dry earthy finish. Il Baratto Trebbiano Umbria I.G.P. 2019 $24 A rustic, expressive white of Trebbiano Toscano (Procanico) with multiple variants of Malvasia. Juicy apple and pear with lots of texture, accented with chamomile and wild mint. No added sulfur. Sangiovese Cap Crown Umbria I.G.P. 1L $24 Sangiovese in a liter bottle--meant to recapture the memories of local farms who sold wine in demijohns, to be bottled at home under crown caps. A light maceration results in a light, fruity wine with wild raspberry, dried figs, bing cherry and sweet green herbs. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. We're koukou for glou glou! Or wait, is it coucou for glou glou?! What can we say, chillable reds are playful and fun to drink. Discover what the craze is all about with these three standout examples. Broc Cellars ‘KOUKOU’ Cabernet Franc 2019 $29 Local favorite Broc Cellars delivers with this fresh, light Cabernet Franc. The fruit comes from Happy Canyon in Santa Barbara County, where a warmer climate brings out explosive raspberry, cranberry and pepper, while a gentle pressi...ng preserves bright acidity. Las Jaras Wines ‘Glou Glou’ 2019 $31 Actor/comedian Eric Wareheim and his friend Joel Burt, a longtime NorCal winemaker, have made Las Jaras a celebrity in its own right. ‘Glou Glou’ is a blend of Zinfandel and Carignan, with a touch of Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon from various vineyards in Mendocino. Fermentation was mostly carbonic, resulting in a lively, juicy wine with hints of blackberry and currant. j.brix wines ‘Coucou’ Counoise 2020 $25 San Diegans Jody and Emily are the lovely duo behind j. brix, and they’ve been embracing a truly local approach with some of their wines. Sourced from a vineyard in northeastern San Diego County, their ‘Coucou’ is 100% Counoise and it's as electric as the sun there. Wild strawberries, a touch of spice, and modest tannins make this irresistible. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. (We also ship!) A Trio from Austria & Slovakia! Wines from central Europe remain astonishingly underrated in the United States, despite the centuries-long, prestigious winemaking tradition of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today’s trio shows off both the history and the vanguard of the region. Bioweingut Johannes Zillinger ‘Revolution’ White Solera NV $32 Johannes Zillinger helms his family’s 350 year-old biodynamic estate in Niederösterreich, Austria. ‘Revolution’ is a blend of Chardon...nay fermented in amphora, Sämling (aka Scheurebe) fermented in barrel, and multiple vintages of Riesling (aged in a unique solera system). The result is a complex wine with rich apricot and spice notes, floral accents, bright acidity, and fabulous texture. Pivnica ajkov ‘Vulcanica’ Pét-Nat #4 $32 Marek Uhnák’s family has a long history in wine and agriculture, dating back to 1666 in ajkov, Slovakia. The vineyards are spread across foothills under the Sitno Volcano, where roots reach deep through volcanic beds and influence the wines’ minerality. A pét-nat of Pesecká Leánka and Pinot Gris with 6 weeks of skin contact, this wine is bone-dry with peach fuzz and tea accents. Bott Frigyes Kadarka 2019 $30 On the southern slopes of the Mužsla Hills in Slovakia, Bott and his son farm 10 hectares of traditionally Hungarian varieties on soil composed of clay and limestone over a volcanic basalt base. Kardarka is typically a light, fruity red akin to Gamay; Bott’s shows surprising depth with notes of black cherry, sage and turned earth. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. (We also ship!) If you purchase all three, you’ll get a 10% discount. Some of our all-time favorite Italian natural wines are back! Sparkling, orange, and red, these are wines that make us supremely happy and yes, we’re in a very festive mood today. Costadilà 450 Slm 2019 $28 Costadilà, a ‘closed-loop’ biodiverse farm north of Venice, shows how beautiful and alive Prosecco can be when made completely naturally. After the passing of founder Ernesto Cattel a few years ago, Costadilà continues under the stewardship of close friends who worked wi...th him in the cellar & vineyard. ‘450 Slm’ is composed of Glera, macerated on the skins for 5-7 days for a crisp, mineral sparkler with tropical fruit notes and a salty, gravelly finish. Podere Pradarolo ‘Vej’ 2019 $28 Alberto and Claudia Carretti are behind Podere Pradarolo, located in the hills of Emilia-Romagna where they farm their vineyards according to biodynamic practices. ‘Vej’ is a world-renowned example of Italian orange wines: Malvasia di Candia with 180 days of skin contact. The color is deep amber and the aromatics are gorgeous; the palate is rewarded with orange peel, tea, and dried apricots. Arianna Occhipinti ‘SP68’ Sicilia Rosso 2019 $32 Arianna Occhipinti hails from natural wine royalty in Sicily, having apprenticed with her uncle Giusto Occhipinti of COS at the age of 16 and released her first wine at the age of 21. A proponent of biodynamic farming whose vineyards are located in the southeastern Vittoria region, her SP68 is a classic Sicilian blend of Frappato and Nero D'Avola. Dark plums mingle with bright red cherry, wild Mediterranean herbs & fresh earth. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. (We also ship!) A trio of wines from Pheasant’s Tears! Taking their name from a Georgian story in which the best wines are those that make a pheasant cry, Pheasant’s Tears produces some of the world’s most sought-after ‘amber’ Georgian wines. Founded in 2007 by American John Wurdeman and 8th generation Georgian winegrower Gela Patalishvili, they’ve brought attention to the ancient winemaking practices and traditions that make the Republic of Georgia--birthplace of winemaking--so unique. All ...of their wines are fermented and aged in qvevri (clay vessels) lined with beeswax and buried underground, with skin maceration ranging from 3 weeks to 6 months depending on the variety. Rkatsiteli Tibaani 2019 $24 Grapes sourced from vineyards in the village of Tibaani in the Kakheti region. 3 months of skin contact, aged 9 months in qvevri. Beautiful amber color with notes of apricot, nuts, tea, and spiced honey. Goruli Mtsvane 2019 $24 Grapes sourced from vineyards in Mukhrani in the Kartli wine region. Mtsvane with some Chinuri, fermented on the skins in qvevri. Lighter than many skin-contact Georgian wines; accessible and crisp. Aromatic with fleshy stone fruit, a hint of lime, and prickly minerality. Rkatsiteli Rosé 2019 $24 Grapes are sourced from vineyards in Tibaani. A ‘pink’ mutation of the Rkatsiteli grape fermented with 1 month skin contact in qvevri. Wild strawberries, blanched almonds, red cherries, and the perfect balance of grippy tannins and bright acidity. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. A trio of Melon de Bourgogne! The Melon de Bourgogne grape is typically associated with Muscadet, the appellation where the Loire River meets the Atlantic. It’s rare in the U.S. but we’re excited to see it embraced by a few growers here, notably the biodynamic pioneer Johan Vineyards in Oregon. With its bright acidity, citrus notes, and salinity, Melon de Bourgogne is a go-to for oysters and a refresher in hot weather. Today’s trio features a gorgeous Loire Valley Muscadet an...d two versions--one still, one sparkling--from the Willamette Valley! Domaine de La Tourlaudière ‘Catorpee’ Melon Blanc 2019 $26 La Tourlaudière has been in the Petiteau family since 1700. Now helmed by Romain Petiteau, the estate’s 25 organically farmed hectares span the diverse range of soils that make Melon shine. Aromatic, with golden apple and nectarine notes, profound minerality and a saline finish. Johan Vineyards Melon de Bourgogne 2018 $28 Johan Vineyards is an 85-acre certified-biodynamic winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Strong proponents of biodiversity, holistic farming, and healthy soils, they also make outstanding wines. Winemaker Morgan Beck started fermenting the Melon with 36 hours of skin contact, giving it depth and weight while delivering racy minerality. Johan Vineyards Melon de Bourgogne Pétillant Naturel 2019 $30 Sparkling Melon! 36 hours of skin contact, followed by a slow fermentation in tank, unfined, unfiltered, no added sulphur. No disgorgement. Fabulous texture opens into a medley of citrus notes from sweet mandarin to tart lemon. Only 92 cases made and truly special! Limit 1 bottle per customer. A trio from La Cave Apicole! Sylvain Respaut started out as a beekeeper in 2007, tending hives of the local black bee in the French Pyrenées. In 2009, he took over some special vineyards, and joined forces with Olivier Cros to expand his efforts into winemaking. They formed La Cave Apicole (the beekeeping cellar). Organically farming a few hectares of mostly old vines, high in the Pyrenées, they produce wines of explosively pure and expressive fruit. We’re thrilled to have ...a trio of new arrivals to share with you! Pink is not Red 2019 $28 Old vine Carignan and younger-vine Syrah combine for a savory rosé, perfect for fall. Aromatic notes of peach cobbler, fresh red fruits, melon, and cherry skins, lifted by good acidity. Plein les Ceps 2019 $28 Grenache treated to carbonic maceration. Wild juicy berries, concentrated red fruit and warm cinnamon spice, yet light on the palate. Give this a chill. Gorgorlou 2017 $30 100-year old Carignan vines, fruit de-stemmed before pressing. A dollop of ripe boysenberry jam, anise and bitters, with a bright tangy finish. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. (We also ship!) A trio of Orange Wines! Orange wines have been the standout trend of pandemic times, as any natural wine shop will tell you. Jokes about the need for skin contact abound. But we’d like to think it’s because drinking at home has made everyone more adventurous, and keen to learn about white wine’s original form: fermented with the grape skins to produce tannins which act as natural preservatives, so that nothing else is needed. Today’s trio features two from Italy, where the an...cient ways are being revived, and one from California, where the ancient ways are just being learned. AmByth Estate Sauvignon Blanc O.W. 2019 $30 Just south of Paso Robles in the Templeton Gap, you’ll find AmByth Estate, biodynamically farmed by Phillip and Mary Morwood Hart. AmByth means forever in Welsh, reflecting Phillip’s childhood. Their foot-tread Sauvignon Blanc from the organic Coquelicot vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley is fermented with its skins for 7 months in Italian terracotta amphorae and neutral oak puncheons. Beautiful spiced nectarine notes with hints of lychee and kiwi. Cantine Riccardi Reale ‘Emotiq’ 2019 $26 Outside Rome, between the Aniene River Valley and Prenestini Mountains in the Lazio region, Cantine Riccardi Reale is a biodynamic winery making terroir-specific expressions of Cesanese and Malvasia Puntinata. ‘Emotiq’ is made from Malvasia and Riesling, grown on volcanic soils, hand-harvested, gently crushed, fermented on the skins for one week, unfined & unfiltered. Apricot and yellow flowers show themselves through zippy food-friendly acidity. Le Coste ‘Bianchetto’ 2019 $30 Le Coste is renowned as a pioneer of central Italy’s natural wine movement. Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron tend 14 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, and oaks in northern Lazio. From a vineyard just over the border in Tuscany, planted on tufo, comes this blend of Procanico, Malvasia, Moscato and other local varieties. Fermented 2 weeks on the skins and aged 6 months, this is a fragrant orange wine with citrus zest, herbs, bruised stone fruit, and a refreshing hint of tonic. We have a treat for you! Three expressions of French Gamay from three different regions: Beaujolais, Burgundy, and the Loire Valley, all by sought-after natural wine producers. The trio offers a unique opportunity to see how soils and conditions impart stylistic variations--and they’ll all convince you Gamay can be much more than a light fruity quaffer. Jean-Claude Lapalu ‘Vieilles Vignes’ Beaujolais Villages 2019 $27 Revered Beaujolais producer Jean-Claude Lapalu farms the s...ame vines his grandfather and father did before him, on slopes that descend from Mont Brouilly down to his village of Saint-Etienne-la-Varenne. Farming organically and biodynamically, employing carbonic maceration for a light touch, he coaxes out layers of juicy plums and berries, warm spices and savory herbs. Right up there with any ‘cru’ Beaujolais. Domaine Céline & Laurent Tripoz ‘Les Perrières’ Mâcon 2018 $30 Gamay is rare in these parts; in fact it was exiled in 1395 by the Duke of Burgundy! Luckily the royal decree has expired, and the biodynamic producers Céline and Laurent Tripoz make a beautiful example. Located just outside Loché, their clay and limestone soils impart a different character than the pink granite for which Beaujolais is famed. Semi-carbonic fermentation preserves fresh, crunchy fruit before aging in neutral oak barrels; the wine is redolent of ripe cherries with modest tannins. Les Sablonnettes ‘Les Copines Aussi’ 2019 $25 Christine and Joel Menard have made wine in the heart of the Loire Valley’s Coteaux du Layon AOC for more than 30 years. Grown in schist, their Gamay is destemmed before maceration and ages six months in tanks, maintaining a zippy acidity that’s superb with food. True to the Loire, this Gamay is a little darker and chewier than its cousins to the north, with hints of black currant and earthy minerality. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. (We also ship!) If you purchase all three, you’ll get a 10% discount! A trio of new Italian natural wines! Natural wines from Italy are unique. Even when they’re light and juicy, they also exhibit complex herbal and mineral qualities that really set them apart. They evoke place profoundly: volcanic slopes, Alpine wildflowers, Mediterranean wild herbs. We have new releases to share with you, and they’re a great introduction to Italy’s natural wine vanguard! Cantina Giardino ‘Na’ 2019 $29 Cantina Giardino began as a joint venture of six friends w...ith the aim of preserving old vineyards and native varieties around Irpinia, a mountain town in the heart of Campania. They’re famed for their spectacular skin-contact ‘orange’ wines. ‘Na,’ a new entry to the lineup, is an approachable introduction--a summery blend of indigenous white varieties macerated 2 days on the skins and aged 7 months in barrel, with apricot fruit and salty, volcanic minerality. Tiberi 'l Rosso 2019 $28 The rocky hilltop village of Monte Petriolo, in northern Umbria, is home to the 4th generation Tiberi family's vineyard and cantina. They’re rising stars in the natural wine community thanks to guidance from their neighbor Danilo Marcucci, Italy’s natural wine-whisperer consultant. Now bottling without any additives whatsoever, their wines are lively, spicy, and rustic. ‘l Rosso is a summer red, mostly the local grape Gamay del Trasimeno, light and juicy with hints of tomato and shiso leaf. Poderi Cellario È! Grino $20 Fausto and Cinzia Cellario are third generation winemakers in Piemonte, committed to working only with local grape varieties and farming organically. Grignolino is one of those local grapes that we rarely see exported as a varietal wine. This one’s a real thirst-quencher--light red, fruity, beautifully aromatic, with zippy acidity. Spotlight on Maurer Winery in Serbia! We were introduced to Maurer’s wines last year, and we just can’t get enough! We’re impressed with everything they make, and today’s line-up includes a white, an orange, and a red wine. Fourth generation winemakers, the Maurer family organically farms old vine local varieties in Serbia. Some of their most important vineyards lie in the Fruška Gora mountain district in Syrmia, 40 miles from Belgrade--a mountain that 90 million years ago wa...s an island in the Pannonian sea, and as a result has an astoundingly rich ecosystem. All of today’s wines hail from those parcels! Kövidinka 2018 $20 Local grape Kövidinka, planted in 1925 in what looks like pure beach sand. Fermented with 4 days of skin contact, this low alcohol ‘white’ is mineral-rich with spicy green apple notes. Bakatorange 2018 $27 Local grape Bakator, planted in 1909 in sandy soils. Ferented on the skins for 7 days, followed by one and a half years in Hungarian oak barrels. Tangy with tropical fruit and herbal tea notes, followed by warm spice. Kadarka 2019 $24 Planted on sandy soils in 1880, 1912 and 1925, this red grape produces a lighter-style wine with bright cherry and a textured minerality, layered with herbal notes throughout. A trio highlighting unusual California varietals! The majority of California vineyards are planted to just 8 commercially popular grape varieties. No surprise, then, that the more obscure varieties are tucked away in historic vineyards and tiny parcels. Today we celebrate those grapes, vineyards, and the winemakers who seek them out. Lieu Dit Winery Melon de Bourgogne Santa Maria Valley 2019 $23 A partnership of longtime friends Eric Railsback and Justin Willett, who set out... in 2011 to produce wines from Loire Valley varieties grown in Santa Barbara County. From the historic Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, their Melon de Bourgogne is crisp and mineral-driven with bright acidity and an almost creamy brininess. There’s a reason the French consider Melon the perfect pairing with raw oysters! Pax Wine Cellars Mission Somer’s Vineyard 2019 $22 Pax Mahle launched his label in 2000, winning acclaim for his cool-climate Syrahs. Now he’s gaining new fans for his evolution into more obscure varieties and minimal intervention winemaking. Mission is thought to be the first grape variety planted in California, brought by Catholic missionaries. Pax sources his from the historic Somer’s Vineyard in Lodi, planted in the early 1900s. Light and juicy with spicy berries and a hint of fresh earth. Arnot-Roberts Trousseau North Coast 2019 $38 Childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts founded Arnot-Roberts in 2001 to focus on small production site-specific wines, now among the state’s most coveted. Trousseau originates in the Jura region in eastern France, and in NorCal Arnot-Roberts sources fruit from three vineyards: Luchsinger (Lake County), Bohan (Sonoma Coast), and Bartolomei (Russian River). Light in color, but packed with flavor--wild strawberries, black cherries, a splash of herbal tonic. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. (We also ship!) A trio of Pét-Nats! Natural bubbles galore today! Pétillant-naturel or ancestral-method wines are bottled before fermentation is complete, so that trapped CO2 creates bubbles as fermentation finishes under pressure. The result is a wine with less carbonation than those made with the Champagne method, and more sediment, spunk and soul! These are some of our favorite new arrivals. Julie & Tony Bainbridge ‘Cuvée La Danseuse’ 2019 $32 From Tony Bainbridge and Julie Cathcart, an E...nglish and American couple who settled in the Loire Valley. Tony worked with Agnès and René Mosse in Anjou, where he gained experience in biodynamic farming that he now applies to his own vineyards. A pét-nat rosé of Grolleau with fine bubbles, fuzzy peach and strawberries, and beautiful earthy spice. Les Capriades ‘Pet-Sec’ 2019 $34 Pascal Potaire and Moses Gadouche hand harvest their grapes from a handful of nearby organic growers in Touraine. They bring a Champagne-level seriousness to their pétillant-naturel wines, riddling and disgorging by hand (sometimes twice!). A shop favorite, this Chenin Blanc is racy with tangy pear, crushed seashells, citrus zest, and bright acidity. Iapetus ‘Figure 2’ Vermont 2019 $35 Vermont is in the vanguard of terroir-specific natural wines, and Ethan Joseph is amongst those leading the way. ‘Iapetus’ is the name of an ancient ocean that once covered the present-day Champlain Valley, where Ethan makes his wines. ‘Figure 2’ is 100% La Crescent grapes, fermented briefly on the skins. It’s completely unique with a mix of lemon curd and lemon drops, and cider notes. Mouth-puckering acidity makes it perfect for any raw bar selection! A Trio from Bay Area Winemakers! With the challenges of 2020 piling up for our California growers and winemakers, we’ve got some local favorites on our minds this week. Times like this remind us how far-flung is the network that lies behind the Bay Area’s urban winemaking--with farmers, field workers, truckers, and cellar hands persevering through daunting conditions. Today’s trio consists of new releases by local winemakers we love and all the other folks whose dedication ...is in the bottle. Côte West Sauvignon Blanc Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak 2018 $34 Bret Hogan is behind Côte West, a family-run urban winery in Oakland. His Sauvignon Blanc from the high elevation, mineral-rich Pine Mountain Vineyard in Sonoma is fermented on the skins for 100 days, whole-cluster. A rosy-orange hue and beautiful aromatics open up to apricot nectar, passion fruit, warm spice and a zippy finish. La Boutanche (Broc Cellars) Red Blend 2019 $22 Chris Brockway is one of the East Bay’s natural wine pioneers, having launched Broc Cellars in Berkeley in 2008. And now he joins the ‘La Boutanche’ cast of critters! La Boutanche is a project by importer Selection Massale, to which their stellar producers contribute natural wines that are fun, fresh, gluggable, and affordable. Broc’s contribution is a blend of Zinfandel, Carignan, and Valdiguie grown in Northern California, with Chris represented on the label by a ‘too-cool-for-school badger.’ Peppery with dark red and purple fruits, refreshing with a chill. Populis ‘Wabi Sabi’ Red 2019 $22 In a basement in Orinda, close friends Diego Roig and Shaunt Oungoulian make standout California natural wines under the labels Les Lunes and Populis. Their Wabi Sabi’ Red is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Carignan, Syrah, and Zinfandel from Mendocino vineyards. Juicy, brambly red berries backed with solid structure, revealing layers of earthy spice as it opens up. Featured wines are available now for in-store purchase or pre-paid pickup. (We also ship!) A Trio of Liters! Who doesn’t love liters right now!? With long summer days, social-distance gatherings, and elaborate home-cooked dinners being our new norm, the extra wine in a liter bottle is much appreciated. Producers generally use the liter format for wines that are easy-going, fresh, and joyful. Here are a few of our favorite new releases! Hervé Villemade ‘Bovin’ Blanc 2019 $22 Hervé Villemade is a Loire Valley natural wine favorite. The Blanc is mostly Sauvignon Blanc... fermented in stainless steel, without any additives. Juicy citrus and tropical fruits, a hint of fresh grass, and zippy texture. Ampeleia 'Unlitro' 2019 $21 From the coast of Tuscany, a project of renowned natural winemaker Elisabetta Foradori and her friends Giovanni Podini and Thomas Widmann. They work with a medley of Mediterranean varieties, all biodynamically farmed. A blend of Alicante Nero (aka Grenache), Carignano, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese, and Alicante Bouschet.
