Sacred Sundays: Emotional Elegance Part 1 Freedom from Anger with Lama Michael Gregory Can we develop patience in the face of anger, peace in uncertainty, happi...ness when faced with challenges and compassion in our suffering. This weeks class focuses on understanding anger, the thinking that underlies this emotion and how to work to transform this emotion to experience greater empowerment and patience in our lives. Though one may conquer a thousand times a thousand men in battle, yet he indeed is the noblest victor who conquers himself. - The Buddha When there is no anger, there is no enemy. If you wish to rid the mind of anger it is simply up to you stop egotistically demanding that reality be different than it is. To develop emotional elegance, we accept that we are 100% responsible for our emotions. "Many of the problems we face today we bring upon ourselves because we focus on these secondary differences between us. We cling to the idea of my nation, my religion, my community, that we are rich while they are poor. This creates a strong sense of ‘us’ and ‘them’. The only remedy is to remind ourselves that we are all the same as human beings. We need to remember the oneness of humanity." His Holiness the Dalai Lama Guwahati, Assam, India, 3 April 2017

The 8 Versus of Mind Training with Lama Michael Gregory This series provides illuminating, powerful and tender insights on training the mind in selflessness on ...the path to compassionate enlightenment. 1. By thinking of all sentient beings. As more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel, for accomplishing the highest aim, I will always hold them dear. 2. Whenever I’m in the company of others, I will regard myself as the lowest among all, And from the depths of my heart, Cherish others as supreme. 3. In my every action, I will watch my mind, And the moment destructive emotions arise, I will confront them strongly and avert them, Since they will hurt both me and others. 4. Whenever I see ill-natured beings, Or those overwhelmed by heavy misdeeds or suffering, I will cherish them as something rare, As though I’d found a priceless treasure. 5. Whenever someone out of envy, Does me wrong by attacking or belittling me, I will take defeat upon myself, And give the victory to others. 6. Even when someone I have helped, Or in whom I have placed great hopes Mistreats me very unjustly, I will view that person as a true spiritual teacher. 7. In brief, directly or indirectly, I will offer help and happiness to all my mothers, And secretly take upon myself, All their hurt and suffering. 8. I will learn to keep all these practices, Untainted by thoughts of the eight worldly concerns. May I recognize all things as like illusions, And, without attachment, gain freedom from bondage. | Rigpa Translations. Revised 2012. Milarepa by Pema Chodron There’s a story about the main turning point in the life of the great yogi Milarepa. He was very much a loner and lived in caves by himself and meditated wholeheartedly for years and years and years. He was extremely stubborn and determined. He couldn’t find anything substantive to eat after barely sustaining himself high in the Himalayas, so to survive he began eating nettles and consequently began turning different shades of green - but he was so... committed to attaining enlightenment that nothing could stop him from practicing. One evening Milarepa returned to his cave after gathering firewood. He went back to his cave only to find out it was filled with demons. They were cooking his food, reading his books, sleeping in his bed. Basically, they had taken over the joint. He knew about nonduality of self and other, but he still didn’t know quite how to get these guys out of his cave. Even though he had the sense that they were just a projection of his own mind, and that they were all the unwanted parts of himself, he didn’t know how to get rid of them. So first he taught them the Dharma. He sat on this seat that was higher than they were and talked about compassion and emptiness and how poison is medicine. Nothing happened. The demons were still there. Then he lost his patience and got angry and ran at them. They just laughed at him. Finally he gave up and just sat down on the floor, saying, I’m not going away and it looks like you’re not either, so let’s just live here together. At that point, all of them left except one. Milarepa said, Oh, this one is particularly vicious. We all know that one. Sometimes, we have lots of them like that. Sometimes we feel that’s all we’ve got. He didn’t know what to do, so he surrendered himself even further. He walked over and just put himself right into the mouth of the demon and said, Just eat me up if you want to. Then that demon left too. The moral of the story is, when the resistance is gone, so are the demons. ~ Pema Chodron Be Grateful to Everyone, A Guide to Compassionate Living

Sometimes a small harsh action can be helpful in averting or overcoming a greater disaster. For example, a small amount of a toxic substance can have medicinal value. So, to achieve the greater good or to control otherwise difficult people, taking some tough action may be helpful, but it is important that it should be motivated by kindness and compassion, not by anger or contempt. ~ HH XIV Dalai Lama

Dharma Roots Don't be bothered with what others do, do not criticize or judge them for their dualistic thoughts and actions; just pay attention to your own mind and nothing else. Once you have become completely liberated you will be able to help others become liberated. When you are liberated you become like a lake of warm water, naturally melting all the ice-blocks you touch. So don't scrutinize what others say or do, just let them be, love them, be kind, and focus on your own liberation first. We are unable to let go of dualistic thoughts that label and judge because, although we might be smart, our love is limited - it isn't yet immeasurable. ~ H. E. Garchen Rinpoche

The Commitee In Your Head These are nothing but empty roles without an atoms worth of inherent reality - look at these fictional dramatic games and the ever-changing roles you identify with as a victim, a persecutor, a judge, a caregiver and rescuer, the warrior, the lover, the sage, the creator and destroyer, the jester...the responsible Mom, the everyday man, the mindful conscious meditator, the Buddhist, and other unnecessary theatrics... Relax the narrative and make an a...llowance for observing natural awareness to simply observe. No commentary please. Let the committee in your head be silent and rest. Or simply smile like an old man basking in the Sun, and gently enjoy the play Without dispassionate observation, you will become the roles and stories you tell yourself - and you will unnecessarily live a life under this weight for no other reason except that you didn’t know there was a choice. The mind is a blank screen, the rest is pure theatre. Free the mind - it is your very nature. In Loving Kindness Metta By Designation Only, Michael
