Martin was a world authority on the history of classical recordings, said Milken Archive artistic Director Neil Levin. Happy birthday to the great American composer, pianist, and bandleader Duke Ellington! Dave looked up to Duke throughout his career. In 1954, TIME Magazine was ...planning a major story on American jazz and had to decide whether to put Dave or Duke on the cover. Dave recalled the story for PBS in 2001: "Duke and I were on tour together across the country and this night, we were in Denver," Brubeck told correspondent Hedrick Smith. "And at seven o'clock in the morning, there was a knock on my door, and I opened the door, and there's Duke, and he said, 'You're on the cover of Time.' And he handed me Time magazine. It was the worst and the best moment possible, all mixed up, because I didn't want to have my story come first. I was so hoping that they would do Duke first, because I idolized him. He was so much more important than I washe deserved to be first." In that same year, 1954, Dave wrote a tribute to his friend called "The Duke", which has become a jazz standard. Dave Brubeck, Erich Kunzel, and Duke Ellington at a recording session for The Gates of Justice, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1969.
