This family super creative with a tripod for their occupational therapy telehealth sessions!!! This kiddo is doing amazing with her fine motor activity. Did you know there's a lot of different skills needed to complete snaps in order to be independent with getting dressed? We would need the hand strength to push snaps together, the dexterity to manipulate the fastener, the hand-eye coordination to match up to two parts... And the list goes on!

!! SWIPE for product recommendations! We see so many kiddos who show a big preference for crunchy and dissolvable foods. They love goldfish, Cheetos, puffs, etc. You know (or parent) these little ones! ... You may have a hard time getting your child to eat or taste fruits or vegetables Many of the parents we meet wish their child would eat less of these snacks, but these snack foods continue to be a staple because they are so heavily preferred That’s exactly where freeze-dried (and similar) produce comes into play! : They pair a familiar crunchy and slightly dissolvable texture with a new taste and new visual They reduce likelihood of tactile and/or oral aversion due to dry and familiar texture. Most produce has a wet and/or slick texture that can be difficult for kiddos at first. They look like the target food, making the eventual transition to the natural food easier due to familiar visual input. Example: freeze dried apples look like apple wedges. The oral motor demands are reduced because freeze dried foods are easy to orally manipulate and dissolve fairly quickly. This can bridge the gap to whole foods for kiddos with oral motor deficits. They are slightly inconsistent in shape and flavor, which is similar to real fruits and vegetables. They can help little ones transition away from the consistency of snack foods. Using freeze-dried produce as a stepping stone can be an amazingly effective way to transition between snack foods and produce. We hope this gives you some inspiration for foods to try with your little one! See more

Eye gaze is so strong in those with Rett Syndrome. You can see the stories they have to tell when they look at you. The communication that comes from their eyes when you truly get to know them. When you have that connection that makes you stop and listen to their eyes. Yes, they have their high tech devices and that is crucial for them. But the communication that happens just from their eyes, unaided, says so much. Read more about Rett Syndrome by Tanya Keller, MS, CCC-SLP at our blog: https://linktr.ee/milestoneclinic

Happy Spina Bifida Month! #BeyondAllLimits Fun Facts Spina Bifida is sometimes called the snowflake of birth defects because no two people with Spina Bifida are exactly alike.... Every day 8 babies are born with Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida occulta or hidden Spina Bifida occurs in 15% of the population. Spina Bifida can occur anywhere along the spine. Spina Bifida occurs in the first 28 days of pregnancy, often before a woman knows she’s pregnant. Spina Bifida is the most common neural tube defect, and impacts the brain and spinal cord. What role does physical therapy have in treating Down Syndrome? As noted above, children with Down Syndrome will develop a delay in gross motor milestones. This delay can be caused by low muscle tone, ligamentous laxity, and decreased strength; ultimately causing compensatory movement patterns. These abnormal movement patterns can lead to long-term issues and complications. Physical therapy can aid in eliminating compensatory movements and facilitate proper movement patterns... for appropriate development. In the long term, by receiving physical therapy, children will develop good posture, proper foot alignment, and an efficient walking pattern. October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month! Years ago, Rett Syndrome was thought of as a degenerative disease, however we now know this is not true. While there are periods of regression, skills can be recouped and individuals continue to learn and gain skills throughout their lifespan. We presume potential in all those that we work with, and always strive to help those we work with continue to learn communication and literacy! Communicative Temptations are a great way to elicit language from kids, and they work very well for AAC! What are communicative temptations? Exactly what it sounds like! These are ways we can invite communication from our kids using items and activities that will tempt them to communicate. These are activities that are interesting and motivating to the child, giving them reason to WANT to communicate. We set up the environment to encourage communication and we engage with ...the child in a way that makes them want to interact with us. Read more about how to do this at our blog!
