Ultrasounds are wonderful tools for more than just pregnancy diagnostics! We use them to also scan calf lungs to look for pneumonia lesions! Covered in poop or covered in hair, the ultrasound does it all!

Dr. Reeder was nice enough to let us snap some pictures of her while she worked and give us a brief run down of the process. There are 4 stomachs in ruminant species (cows, goats, sheep) and they are called: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Normally the abomasum sits on the right side of the cow and acts as the ‘true stomach’ (like a person’s stomach). However, when cows go off their feed for whatever the reason, (infection, pain, post-partum, etc.) the abomasum fills up with air and rotates to the left side of the body. We can correct this surgically with an LDA surgery which can be performed on either the right or left side of the cow. *Fun fact* Dr. Brandt is the only doctor at our practice that cuts from the left side, everyone else prefers right.

Just finished CIDR synching the MJC dairy heifers! A big thank you to our friends at Zoetis for donating their time, supplies, and expertise to the project as always! An even bigger thank you to all of our Ag teachers (Nicole Morris) out there who continue to find ways to bring their love for this industry to the ‘classroom’ even when there isn’t one!
