Removing Water Marks Mercedes Porsche Mechanic | Midtown Auto Repair | Services | Sacramento P. 916.382.7700... Water marks are one of the most common issues that car owners face. Water marks are caused by the deposits, sediments, or minerals that are found in unfiltered water. Deposits often take the form of minerals that may be found in tap water or sprinkler water. Deposits can also be found in the pollutants that pour down in the form of rain during the winter season. We understand that they can be frustrating and hard to deal with so today we are going to walk you through a few tricks to help you remove those unwanted marks from your car. If you can catch water marks early enough a simple detailing spray will do the trick. Apply the detailing spray directly on the water mark, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and simply wipe it off with a microfiber towel. If the detailing spay does not get rid of the marks right away try again as it might take two or three attempts. If detailing spray does not work after three attempts, this means that too much time has elapsed between the water settling in and being baked on. If this is the case, you need to try another solution. An alternative to detailing spray that might work more effectively is good old vinegar. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book. If using this method, fill a small container with vinegar and soak a sponge in the solution. Do not rub on the water spot but instead let the vinegar stain the water mark spot itself. After a couple of minutes thoroughly wash the surface with clean water. Again, if the water marks are being stubborn, you might have to give this a try two to three times. If the two options above do not work, you are probably going to have to turn to paint cleaner or polish. Paint cleaners will work with stubborn water marks because they are designed specifically to cater to defects below the surface. Polish will work because it removes a little bit of the paint to level it out. By polishing, the upper layer of paint coat is leveled out with the lower layers where the defects might have reached. The only downside to using paint cleaner or polish is that you might have to have a professional do it for you, which is more often than not, pretty expensive. The best way to deal with water marks is to just catch them early. If you catch them early, they will be easy to remove. Instead of hopping on that airplane this summer stay in your car, bring your family along, and go on a road trip! Going on a road trip is a great way to spend quality time with your family while practicing social distancing. However, before you buckle up and drive those long miles you need to make sure your car is prepared and ready. Here are a few things you can do to prepare. Check your air conditioning. Summer is hot so be sure to check your air conditioning as a marginally operating system will fail in extremely hot outside temperatures. If your air conditioning hasn’t been checked in a while bring it in so we can look it over. We’ll make sure all of your cabin air filters are clean and your system is fully functioning. Check your cooling system. The number one cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. If your car’s cooling system hasn’t been completely flushed and refilled in two or more years you need to bring it in or do it yourself at home. We typically recommend a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. Lastly, make sure your tires are ready for a long road trip. If they have no traction don’t risk it and get them replaced right away. Check their pressure. Check them periodically on your road trip. Don’t forget to check your spare tire as well. Make sure it’s ready if it needs to take over. If your jack is broken, get a new one just in case. Check your tires and tire equipment as they are the last thing you want giving you problems while you’re on the road.
