A favorite quote from the Língsh Posted @withregram @drphilgarrison Commentary: In this passage from Língsh Chapter 1, the skill of an acupuncturist in treating a disease is described through a series of metaphors. In each of these metaphors, a transformation from a negative to a positive state occurs. The message is clearthe skillful acupuncturist ultimately transforms a state of disease to a state of health. Translator's note: The character sequence, (xu w) is an... interesting one. Other translators have rendered it as "cleanse a stain" or "wash a stain." My reading is based on the etymology of (xu), which can mean "wipe away," but originally meant "snow" or, as the pictograph suggests, "rain () that can be swept ()." The character (w) is a bit more straightforward, and means "dirt," "filth," or "stagnant water," hence the common reading of "stain". I therefore chose to translate (xu w) as "sweep(ing) away dirt," because a native English speaker would not say "sweep(ing) away a stain." See more
