Rialto launches Safe Routes to School program with celebration at Myers Elementary School Rialto, Calif. On Wednesday , Aug. 3, The City of Rialto formally unveil the first of many street improvements designed to increase safety for students walking and bicycling to school. The celebration began at 7 a.m. at Meridian Avenue and Madrona Street in front of Myers Elementary School. The public is invited. The new crosswalk is part of Rialto’s Safe Routes to School initiative, f...unded in part by a $1.45 million Active Transportation grant from the California Transportation Commission. Rialto has always prided itself on being a leader in public safety, and we’re excited to launch this important phase of our Safe Routes to School program, Mayor Deborah Robertson said. The initiative is in partnership with the Rialto Unified School District, and includes physical improvements and an informational campaign designed to raise awareness among students, parents and motorists of school pedestrian safety issues. RUSD has 29 schools within the city limits. Geographically, Rialto is not getting any bigger, but our population will continue to grow, which increases the need for programs such as this, Robertson said.
