In pregnancy it is not recommended that women consume deli meats, packaged smoked salmon, blue cheeses or soft cheeses such as Brie due to the risk of infection with listeria. Listeria can cross the placenta and can infect the fetus leading due to poor pregnancy outcomes. Please speak with your OBGYN about what foods are not safe to eat in pregnancy.

VSDs (ventricular septal defects) are more commonly being diagnosed in the fetus at the time of the anatomy (20 week) ultrasound now that ultrasound technology has advanced. A heart murmur may be the first sign of a VSD in the newborn if not diagnosed during the pregnancy. The good news is that 90% of VSDs close spontaneously by age one and don’t require any intervention!

Can I get gestational diabetes from eating too many sweets during pregnancy? The answer is no, not necessarily. Family history, genetics, extra weight gain and placental hPL hormone production all contribute to the risk for getting diagnosed with GDM. For any high risk patients, GDM screening is recommended in the first trimester so dietary counseling and/or treatment can be initiated early. If the first trimester test is negative, the GDM screen should be repeated at 24-28 weeks. Of note, the 1 hour GDM screening test does not have to be done fasting. The 3 hour GDM diagnostic test however requires an 8 hour fast.

Ultrasound is used to diagnose a placenta previa or low-lying placenta. In some women the placenta implants low in the uterus in the beginning of the pregnancy. In most cases the placenta moves away and out of the way of the birth canal by 20 weeks. But in some instances it can stay low until the 3rd trimester or even until delivery. A detailed ultrasound by a perinatologist can help determine placental location and help guide management of the pregnancy. Women with a low placenta are at risk for bleeding and should refrain from certain activities until the placenta moves a safe distance away from the birth canal. A good image of a placenta previa can be found at the below link:

Should pregnant women drink coffee? According to the American College of OBGYN, drinking up to 200 mg of caffeine per day (equivalent to a 12oz cup of coffee) has not been shown to increase the risk for miscarriage or preterm birth. For women opting to drink decaffeinated beverages, look into choosing organic coffees to decrease exposure to chemicals used in the decaffeination process.
