One of the things I love about Dr. King was his collaborative spirit. He was willing to work with anyone who was working toward the goals of equality and justice, even when their methods differed from his. Dr. King understood that it took us all working together to end racism in America and usher in a better world for our children. That goal took him far out of his comfort zone. It is very easy when faced with challenging times to hunker down but as Dr. King and all the Civil... Rights activists showed, so much is accomplished beyond that place of comfort. When I first came to the States, it wasn’t unusual to hear me say things like don’t compare me to African Americans or Everyone can accomplish whatever they set their minds to if they stop complaining and work hard. This mindset came from a narrative that was feed to us; that African Americans were lazy, welfare abusing complainers who made excuses about racism being the reason why they couldn’t get their shit together. It took me learning about the history of slavery in America, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement, Redlining etc. to understand that the narrative was meant to divide and to subvert from the truth. And I could have chosen to stay in my place of well, you’re different because you’re not from here. You’re not like them. But I didn’t, partly because my children are African American, partly because I was black and mostly because I wanted to do my part in fighting for equality. I am not a natural activist or someone who speaks my mind to strangers. However, every year I have pushed through some of my limitations to arrive here. I share this with you with hope that you will challenge your mindset, your limitations, your actions in the face of controversy and challenges and that you will answer Dr. King’s call to choose LOVE instead of HATE, choose ACTION instead of INACTION and that you will SPEAK UP instead of STAYING SILENT. #mlkday2021 #standupforwhatsright #speakupspeakout #loveoverhate
