Throughout June, we’re honored to celebrate our LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies, like Wayne Soo Hoo, Quality Director at our sister hospital, Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Our care for patients is made even better because of you. My husband and I attend and often volunteer at PRIDE Events in Sacramento as part of celebrating during June, said Soo Hoo. We celebrate PRIDE thro...ughout the year by donating to organizations that advance social justice such as the Human Rights Campaign and the Mercy Foundation. . . . #loveislove #howipride #pridemonth #pride #lgbtq See more

Thank you to David Dickstein for sharing his experience with our Bariatric Surgery Program. Read more about his #weightlosthealthgained journey: "Gaining 50 pounds in my 50s put me in what the medical community classifies as morbidly obese, and no doubt that contributed to other health issues including sleep apnea, edema and quadriceps tendonitis. Throw in wheezing and shortness of breath when just climbing a flight of stairs or simply putting on my shoes and socks. Every o...ne of those conditions has vanished with my significant weight loss. My excellent surgeon, Dr. Afshin Eslami, said he’s not surprised as weight-related issues often resolve themselves with bariatric surgery. My prediabetes is no longer a concern thanks to my operation, and my blood pressure was low enough at a recent med check that my hypertension medication was cut in half. Hopefully, I’ll soon be off all meds for high blood pressure and cholesterol. I feel great." 41-year-old Matthew ‘Matt’ Rogge, Sacramento Fire Department firefighter, tested positive for COVID-19 in early July. He battled high fevers, body aches, extreme fatigue, and a 25lb weight loss in just two weeks because he could barely eat. Thankfully Matt recouped enough to return to duty mid-August but the road to recovery wasn’t over. Dr. David Caretto, Occupational Medicine Physician, has been overseeing Matt’s return to work to ensure he’s in tip-top shape and avoids any... relapses, as much as possible. He referred Matt to our sister hospital, Mercy General Hospital’s (MGH) Pulmonary Rehabilitation, where he’s been coming since mid-November. Recently, as part of his rehab, Matt has been suiting up with all his gear and then some in tow. He and Ken, MGH Respiratory Therapist, put his lungs to the test. One essential worker helping another. Everyone has been super helpful in my recovery. We’re all in this together and we have to look out for each other. Just because this hasn’t affected you personally doesn’t mean it is not affecting a lot of other people. My gear is essential and now so is this mask. If I can wear 70lbs worth of gear to protect me from a fire, we can all wear a lightweight mask. Please don’t get complacent we’re almost to the finish line. Thank you for all you do, Matt.

Music is good for the mind, body, and soul! It can improve relaxation, decrease muscle tension, and reduce pain perception in patients. It was important to the team at Mercy General that patients with COVID-19 don't miss out on the benefits of therapeutic music and so the team found a way to safely bring melodies into their rooms. In this video, Mary Superak, Certified Music Practitioner at Mercy General Hospital, plays music for a COVID patient. Slide through the images to see Mary's point of view.

With the approval of a COVID-19 vaccine, this week represents a huge milestone in the fight against the virus. As we celebrate, we felt it was important to also take pause to honor those who have gotten us this far and who continue to do all they can to keep our community healthy and well. People like Emily Adorjan, carrying baby Norah, has showed up throughout her pregnancy and answered the call as a respiratory therapist to work with some of our most critically ill patients. Protected by PPE, she feels confident she can perform her critical role safely. She is one of many respiratory therapists, nurses, doctors, environmental services staff members, and many others who continue to show up every day for you, for us and for each other. Thank you for all you do. #hellohumankindness

Strokes don’t discriminate: 1 in 4 people worldwide will have one. But up to 80% of first strokes may be prevented. You can reduce your risk and improve brain function. And that’s even more important now, because some factors that put you at risk for stroke such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity increase your risk for complications from COVID-19.
