Professor and Gallery Director Alessandra Moctezuma in the San Diego Union Tribune writing about her expectations for 2021. In my classes, the pandemic opened virtual portals, while social distancing restrictions brought us close to those who were geographically inaccessible. Behind-the-scenes visits to museums were replaced with Zoom meetings with arts professionals from Los Angeles and New York. As I look ahead to at least the first half of 2021, I will connect the Museum... Studies students with professionals from various cities with this technological platform. Besides being energized about teaching she is excited to see a couple of projects come to life after hard work in 2020. A retrospective of Chicana artist Judy Baca at the Museum of Latin American Art and the exhibition NOW featuring the collective Twenty Women Artists at the Oceanside Museum of Art. Baca for personal accounts, live Q & A, and a live panel discussion with presenters, moderated by Susana Smith Bautista, Ph.D. MMA is also proud to welcome United States Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera as the invoc...ation speaker for this year’s Art of the State Symposium. The Symposium coincides with the Califas exhibition opening January 8, in partnership with Museo Eduardo Carrillo. MMA will also host local musicians, actors, and spoken word performances during breaks and transitions. See more
Thanks to Seth Combs and the San Diego Union Tribune for the mention of our Mesa College Drive-In exhibition in the memorable art events in 2020!
We’ve brought many photography exhibitions to Mesa including John Brinton Hogan, Ed Kashi, Paul Turounet, Monique Michelle Verdin, Sheila Pinkel, Maria Teresa Fernandez, Delilah Montoya, Carmela Castrejon and many more. We also have a photography department with B/W photography taught by Patricio Chavez and theory classes by Jacqueline Ramirez and Christopher Ferreria. Professor and Gallery Director Alessandra Moctezuma joined the board of Medium photography, an organizat...ion that presents annual conferences and workshops and serves emerging and established photographers. She’d like to make more connections with our diverse audience of students, budding photographers or enthusiasts in the making. Medium has also brought artists and encouraged connections to Mexico and Latin America. If you love photography consider making a year end donation to this organization that is local but brings national and international talent to San Diego. https://www.mediumphoto.org/giving

Sunday art funnies.
Our arts building was nominated earlier in the year. We won an Orchid Architecture Award. It’s a beautiful place to learn and now during COViD closure we miss the gallery space and workroom with daily meetings with students. It was super exciting to see our dream of a state of the art gallery come true. More beautiful than we could have imagined.
