Merigan Sub Shop

I have come to the gut-wrenchingly difficult decision to close the sub shop. Difficult doesn’t really do it justice. Nobody likes having to write this sort of thing, where you have to admit it didn’t work and apologize to your investors, family, customers and employees. There seems to be so much of this closure lately in our industry, that we have heard it all before. I’m not going to stand here and blame the city, or my landlord (who is actually pretty fantastic and gene...rous), or my customers for not getting it, or the cost of food, the cost of labor, cook shortage, poor choice of location, poor allocation of funds, or any of the other myriad of factors that ultimately led to this point. The fact of the matter is that at the sub shop, we had a clear and noble vision and stuck to it, sometimes to a fault. I have no doubt that we helped raise the bar for the sandwich game in San Francisco, and for that I am really proud. There have been so many wonderful people who have been a part of this team, and these are the people I know I’m letting down the most. At times, it felt like the Island of Misfit Toys, as our shop was made up of my former cooks, other people’s sous chefs and cashiers, people between jobs or locations, people willing to lend a hand in times of (sometime severe) need or brand newbies whom we helped to shape. And of course there were the ones who stayed and made a significant mark on the business. We were a wacky, tiny but mighty, incredibly strong team, and to say I’m grateful for having had the chance to employ these people would be an understatement. I hope I am able to send them out into the world, having learned the values of teamwork, integrity and discipline in this industry, and for most of them, some whole hog butchery skills as well... To all of our partners, ranchers, bakers, vendors, farmers, sales reps, creators, artists and visionaries who helped shape our business and made our food and environment really shine: thank you. We will collaborate again soon. To our loyal customers: Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You have great taste, and I hope to feed you again some day. Our last day of operations will be Saturday, October 8. Until then, please come through for a chicken parm, a 5-pack of cookies, ham egg and cheese, or an Italian combo with burrata. And, on a final note, if you love a place and you want it to be around for a long time, please support it. Life is short.

Today was a busy day and we are a little short-staffed. Thank you to our rock star staff who banged it out the best they could. Thank you to our loyal customers who came in and waited a little bit- we hope your lunch was worth it.

So... it looks like they changed the Game Time today to 5:05 today. Therefore, fear not, friends and San Francisco Giants fans, we will be open until 5:05.
