My Opener Is Not Working From The Street Any Longer. It is a simple matter to determine why your opener is no longer working from the street. Follow these steps to determine the problem. 1) Replace your battery. 2) It could be the transmitter itself that has gone bad. ...Continue reading

Are There Batteries In Garage Door Openers? Why? Many of the openers now sold, whether they be from Genie, Liftmaster, Linear, etc. have a battery option. The battery allows the opener to work even during a power outage. This is important for elderly and disabled people. If they have an emergency while there is a temporary power outage. (How often are there power outages? How often do you have an emergency where you have to leave the house while there is a power outage? And i...f you can't lift the door yourself should you be driving yourself?) Garage door repair companies love these batteries and try to stress the positives in them by playing people fears. They do this because when the battery dies the homeowner will often call the company they got the opener from for a new battery. The new battery with the service is usually over $100. And the batteries go bad every two years. The opener seems to sense when that particular battery has been in, and in exactly two years, will start emitting a loud sound like that in a smoke detector. A very annoying sound that can't be ignored. (Not appropriate for something so minor in my opinion.) So the garage door repair company gets repeat business every two years exactly like clock work. Easy pure profit for little more than driving to the customers residence and picking up as much as a couple hundred dollars. Now does the homeowner really need battery backup? That's an easy question to answer. Just ask the homeowner if they have any problems opening or closing the door by hand. If it is not an issue for them then they certainly do not need the battery! Unless the customer likes the idea and realizes they will be out $100 to $200 every two years. Then it is morally OK to take their money. I feel the opener should be as simple as possible, the less to go bad the better, and only open and close the door. Gimmicks like batteries, internet connections, lights, safety sensors, etc., are more things to go wrong and lessen the lifespan of the opener and should therefore be avoided. Naturally each vendor's battery system is slightly different. You will need to consult the vendors manual to determine what the beeps mean and how to replace the batteries. A few garage door openers have tricky battery compartments and hook ups that might have been put in to make it difficult for the owner and encourage the them to call a service tech. Yes, I'm very cynical about anybody actually needing batteries. If they are in such bad shape then they would have a helper or caretaker. The caretaker should have no problem opening the door by hand... Again making the battery totally unnecessary. HOW DO YOU QUIET DOWN THE GARAGE DOOR? (I wrote this post first to my website at https://mgdor.com/how-do-you-quiet-down-the-garage-door and then copied it here.) First oil all the hinges. I recommend Tri-Flow from Menifee Bicycles or Sun City Hardware. Maybe even Hanks Hardware. Tri-Flow is one of the top chain lubricants used by crazy bicyclists that will spend an extra $5,000 for a bike that weighs one pound less. It sticks to the hinges and works for long periods of time....Continue reading

Today's problem job was replacing the springs on a Martin door. The door was one of their standard doors as can be seen on their website http://www.martindoor.com/residential-gar//martin-standard. There was a single torsion spring on the right hand side that was broken. Now I know Martin warranties their springs for life so the owner and I called Martin. Figured I might as well save the owner some money. They had the premium springs shown here http://www.martindoor.com/qua...Continue reading

Yesterday I wrote https://mgdor.com/our-springs-vs-the-competition where I attempted to show pictures of the springs my competition uses and how to verify you always get a better deal from me in terms of the right quality longer lasting springs at a better price. The pictures didn't turn out well if you view it from a large monitor. More for a small monitor or smart phone. Otherwise the pictures float about. The point though is to visually show I order over-the-top springs better than anybody else in the market yet charge less.

I spent a considerable amount of time making a page that easily allows you to determine how many cycles a spring will give. Torsion springs on garage doors are not all equal. The industry standard is for 10,000 cycles. Lifetime springs are considered over 25,000 cycles. This table allows you to measure your spring and determine how many cycles your spring will last.

So I log in here to see if anybody has left me a review. No luck. What does catch my attention is an advert from Facebook blocking my screen. It says: "Facebook will automatically promote your business to the right people for the best results. Reach more people in your local community for $70,000 a month." $70,000 a month? $840,000 a year? Wow! So to pay that after taxes, after hardware costs, and make a return I'd have to be raking in about 10 million a year. Do such garage door companies exist anywhere. Facebook is so confusing to me!

OK, so I'm not a Facebook user. I have no idea how to use it. Frankly it confuses me. For instance I thought customers did not have the ability to give me ratings via Facebook. That only Yelp and Google had that ability. However, yesterday, I learned that Facebook can not only be used to accumulate customer ratings and reviews but that there are several local communities that use Facebook as their go-to for finding contractors. So as of today I will start posting here on Facebook regularly and list it as a place where people can leave reviews.
