What do you need to know to get started? Wear comfortable clothes. Sweats and a T-Shirt or leggings and a T-Shirt is just fine. Leave your shoes and other items at the benches by the door. ... Traditionally we don’t walk with our shoes on in our practice space. It is preferable to practice barefoot unless you are cold, then you can start with socks on though you will probably take them off eventually. Come to class a bit early to meet your teacher (we are all friendly)! If you don’t have your own mat we have one you can borrow and yes, we clean them after every use. We use a variety of props in yoga including blocks, bolsters, blankets, straps, chairs and the wall. Your teacher will get you set up with everything you need prior to class. You will feel most comfortable if you don’t eat just prior to class. If something feels pinching or burning or painful in a not-good-way tell your teacher. They will help you adjust. Your teacher my touch you to adjust your body in your practice. If you aren’t comfortable being touched just tell us! At the end of class we all lie down and take a little nap. It is called Shavasana. We’ll see you this week at class, right?

More Mindfulness, Less Stress Today, it’s unusual to meet anyone who does not suffer in some way from stress. The demands pressures of our lives and of the world we live in often leads to a stress reaction. Our minds and heart race, our churn or, as stress becomes more chronic, we develop headaches, disturbed sleep or physical pain. Some people relieve stress through exercise, some through prescriptions or self-medication. Hower, more people are turning to meditation to culti...vate a sense of connection, calm and well-being so that their daily lives can have more meaning and and ease. Controlled clinical studies carried out by the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness have documented lasting symptom reductions ranging between 29 and 46 percent for conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, physical pain and anxiety. Moments of mindfulness are moments of peace and stillness, even in the midst of activity, says Jon Kabat-Zinn in his popular book, Full Catastrophe Living. Actions as seemingly simple as learning to breather more fully and paying attention to our own experience as we make our way through the day can have profound effects. How often do we slow down enough to really appreciate the moment? What percentage of our time is spent experiencing the past or the future, rather than the present? Much of the stress we experience daily comes by our own making, as we worry about the prepare for things that might not happen and chastise ourselves for things we cannot change, all the while missing the moment that really exists, the present. A mindfulness practice invites us to experience life, every moment, every situation, in more peaceful and more joyous ways.

Ha/Tha Yoga: We recommend that students attend class 2 times a week to maintain their practice and 3 times a week to progress their practice. More committed students will practice yoga every day. Understanding a yoga studio schedule can be difficult! And frequently we end up taking the classes that fit the schedule of our life. That is fine. Any practice is valuable! You can always modify ANY class. child’s pose is a wonderful friend and has many many benefits.... But, we thought a little guidance to understanding our schedule is in order. We think of classes as energetic experiences. As yogis we think of these energies as Ha and Tha; heating and cooling, solar and lunar, inhaling and exhaling, Yin and Yang. All classes will have a bit of both energy, but will be weighted towards one energy or the other. A well-balanced class will lead to an experience of a third energy (sometimes called Shakti, Kundalini, or sensitization). For students interested in more Gentle (Tha) pathways of yoga we suggest they attend Hatha Yoga; Yin Yoga or Gentle & Restorative Yoga Classes. For students interested in more Invigorated (Ha) practices of yoga we suggest they attend Hatha Flow and Vinyasa Yoga classes. Beginners are welcome in all classes. If you have movement limitations, injuries or other concerns please alert your instructor prior to class.

So you want to try yoga, but are totally intimidated by walking into the studio? Guess what? So many people tell me they can’t come to yoga because they can’t touch their toes. And, of course, that happens to be the best reason to come to yoga! ... You do not need to be able to do some combination of gymnastic-aerobics to practice and benefit from yoga. You do not need to look like a super model. You do not need $100 yoga pants. You only need to be able to breath in and out. Really that is the only requirement! We’ve got your back (rather literally). We LOVE new students at our studio. Yogic wisdom states that it takes 50,000 lifetimes to learn about yoga so naturally we are thrilled when you show up!
