Unsure about any career options available in science, her knack for research was awakened by Professor Pamela Byrd-Williams at LAVC. Through the support of the Bridges to UCLA program, Caroline got her first taste of biomedical research at UCLA as a community college student. Caroline then transferred to California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded MARC scholar able to conduct research both at CSUN and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute before graduating with her bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from CSUN. She then pursued a NIH funded post-baccalaureate research program at the University of Michigan where she gained critical skills and expertise needed to pursue her PhD in Biology at Stanford University. Caroline's journey to and through Stanford has been far from straight and/or easy, but the rewards have ultimately been the opportunities that higher education and science have provided for her and her family since the start of her journey at LAVC. Shabnum Patel Shabnum Patel is the Associate Director of Process Development and Manufacturing in the Center for Cancer Cell Therapy at Stanford University. She was raised locally in East San Jose and attended UCLA for undergrad. She subsequently moved to Washington DC to attend George Washington University, where she received her PhD in Immunology, focusing on HIV cure strategies. Her interests are in the scale-up and translation of immuno-oncology research into Phase I/II clinical trials, with a focus on novel cell and gene manufacturing platforms & technologies. She has worked extensively in the GMP field for cell therapy, focusing on the development and characterization of virus-specific T cell therapies and gene-modified cell therapies, and has published in each of these fields with an emphasis on HIV and cancer. There will be more in this series -- the next event is Oct 15th. Hope to see you all on Thursday!
