Legalese is known for superfun compound words like notwithstanding, herein, and hereto. Today I learned a new one, "hereat." It made me laugh because it sounded like a failed attempt at hoity-toitiness. Ex: "documentation attached hereat" but google tells me it's legit

This is the face of an unlawfully present person. No really. I overstayed my student visa while studying in Ireland, and lived illegally, working under the table, afraid of getting caught. If I'd been caught? Well actually I was, by customs agents in Heathrow when trying to return to Ireland. I was detained several nerve wracking minutes, then allowed to fly to Dublin, where I was greeted by a laughing Irish customs agent, remarking on how I'd "gotten the Brits' knicker...s in a twist." If things had gone really badly, I'd probably have been given a nice meal and sent home on an airplane.... Not the same situation here in the USA. I have read about heartbreaking conditions and outcomes for detained children, children who have been traumatically separated from their families. Many of us wish we could help them, and stop these unconscionable people and policies. My hat is off to the organizations that are on the front lines advocating for these children and their families. So very sad and disheartening. How desperate one must be to attempt to cross the Rio Grande with no boat, no life vests.... I work in immigration law, and I know how slow the asylum process is. We need grass roots activism and action to help save our fellow humans.
