The La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology is a 186,000sf facility consisting of three stories above-ground and one story below. The primary functions consist of a biology laboratory, vivarium, BSL-3 research, and supporting office space. MPA’s scope focused on the third floor, entire southwest quadrant, and shell space. LIAI built out the area of roughly 7,000 sf (6,000 sf of flexible laboratory space and the remaining 1,000 sf containing the new electrical room and core restrooms). The Natural History Museum is located in San Diego’s Balboa Park and is the oldest scientific institution in Southern California and consists of 150,000 sf of space. MPA completed an energy conservation study which was conducted to identify potential energy efficiency measures (EEMs) that would improve occupant comfort, optimize the operation of the existing HVAC equipment, reduce the operational costs of the building, and result in a smaller energy footprint. Options were a...lso explored for localized humidity control for delicate exhibitions, as well as an analysis of energy saving associated with removing the skylight added in 2001. For each EEM identified, MPA performed engineering and economic analyses to determine potential energy savings, estimated costs for the EEM implementation, and simple payback periods. Project Highlight: SDSU South Campus Plaza / Plaza Linda Verde (Design-Build) This $142 million project consists of a two-building, mixed-use development on 3.57 acres of university-owned land on the periphery of the SDSU campus near the corners of College Avenue and Montezuma Road. The student housing project includes a ground floor, mixed-use commercial component with upper-floor student housing (350 total units), structured parking, one acre of campus green, public promenades, and pedestrian malls. Project Highlight: California State University San Marcos Student Union The CSUSM Student Union serves as a gateway for the northern entrance of the campus. It includes 89,000 sf of student-life spaces and consists of a central living room for the entire campus with connections to student lounges, study spaces, retail, café, and exhibit areas. The design of the County of San Diego’s Pine Valley Fire Station highlighted below consisted of the redevelopment of a 0.45-acre site and included the demolition design of a single-story 6,900-sf structure and the construction of a new 13,810-sf, 2-story fire station. Along with an amazing project team, MPA completed the SDSU Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences Complex in 2018. Who would have known that two years later we would be in the middle of a pandemic, making this beautiful building currently unavailable for students to collaborate and learn in. The project is comprised of teaching labs and flexible research space to accommodate a range of engineering and science programs. The building contains a clean room and features a hig...h-performance mechanical system that pressurizes the lab spaces to make the rooms safer for students and staff. SDSU EIS is LEED Gold Certified and was awarded the Large Building Project Achievement from the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) San Diego Chapter. Laboratory update: MPA provided M/P services for Phenomenex which wrapped up last year and encompassed 20,000 sf of new laboratory and office space. The facility serves as a key function in the development and production of chromatography columns and extraction tubes for pharma/bio, clinical research, forensics, agricultural, food safety, fuels, and various industries.
