Sheltering In Place This morning, as I made my usual cup of tea, a line from the late 1960s ballad "He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother" began looping, as random so...ngs will do, in my brain. Like a scratched groove on a well-worn 33 rpm record it kept playing, over and over. "The road is loooooong" I thought, "How long?" How long until a trip to the grocery store will no longer be scary? How long until we can board a plane? How long until the kids can go back to school again? How long until we can safely meet friends and co-workers sans face masks and social distancing? How looooong As I looked out the window at the sprouting seeds in my vegetable garden, another line from the song replaced the first. "But I’m stroooooong." Now this line caught my attention, gaining added significance when I learned that the inspiration for the '60s song was a story concerning a small Scottish girl in the 1880s who was seen trudging along a road carrying a younger sibling. Asked if it was hard for her to carry the weight, she answered laconically, "He’s not heavy, he’s my brother." As our society slowly begins to reopen, there will be more hurdles to overcome. Amid all our hopes for positive news there may be setbacks, then increased worry and concern. I hope that, as we all try to adjust to an ever-changing situation, we do this with kindness and patience. And maybe we can take a tip from a matter-of-fact Scottish girl and the '60s song she inspired to be reminded that, "Together, we will get there." As always, stay safe and take care of each other. City of Clearlake Closes Lobby to the Public Due to COVID-19 On Saturday, March 14, 2020, a state of emergency related to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) was d...eclared in the City of Clearlake. While there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 yet in Clearlake or Lake County, the Declaration will allow city officials to facilitate the mobilization of local resources and gives us the ability to coordinate interagency response, accelerate procurement of vital supplies, use mutual aid, and allow for future reimbursement by the state and federal governments. Preparation is critical to successfully responding to COVID-19. As stated by the Center for Disease Control, social distancing is a vital component of preventing the spread of COVID-19 by minimizing the risk of exposure. The situation surrounding COVID-19 is rapidly changing and we are implementing measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. To that end, I am announcing the closure of City Hall to the public effective immediately and continuing until at least March 31, 2020. This closure includes both the lobby of the administrative offices and the police department lobby. The City will attempt to facilitate normal business through phone calls, email, and video conferencing as necessary. The City’s priority during this declared emergency is to continue to protect the public, as well as our employees so we may continue to serve, by limiting the spread of COVID-19. We appreciate your understanding and your patience. Please call (707) 994-8201 for questions or accommodations in conducting City business.
