I am super proud of MHC player, 2006 birthyear, Matty Fuentes. One of the strongest kids I know.. Matty had severe aplastic anemia. A rare blood disorder that ...almost took his life last April. Severe aplastic anemia is bone marrow failure, when the bone marrow stops making blood. He is now back training 4 times a week with us at MHC, determined to move up in the ranks of ice hockey and US Military. Please describe your families military involvement: I was raised in a military service family. My grandmother, grandfather, and great uncle are U.S. Navy veterans, my uncle is a U.S. Army veteran. My cousin Brandon currently serves in the US Navy and my aunt is a U.S. Air Force Honorary Commander. My dad served as a KC-135 Crew Chief in the U.S. Air Force from 1986-1992. My aunt, grandmother and cousin volunteered at the Bob Hope USO at LAX. My goal is to attend a U.S. military academy after graduating from JSerra. Describe a gift or talent you have that will benefit JSerra Catholic High School in a positive manner. I bring leadership and an appreciation for life to JSerra since I almost recently lost my life. In March and April 2019 I was weak, didn’t feel well and was experiencing bloody noses and random vomiting. I took a break from my passion, ice hockey, because I tired easily from physical activity. Through the grace of God, on April 12th, my dad, brother and I went to our favorite pizza place in Aliso Viejo for Friday night pizza and to visit with friends. On this particular night, our friend Dr. Mabel Cortes was there. She was preparing to leave when her boyfriend convinced her to stay a few more minutes. When we arrive she thought my coloring was disturbing and asked my dad if she could evaluate me. After five minutes of testing me, she recommended my dad rush me to the ER. We thank our Lord Dr. Cortes stayed five extra minutes because she saved my life. My life changed forever at around 8:30 pm, April 12th, 2019. The ER ran blood tests and thought I had leukemia, so they transported me to CHOC (Childrens Hospital of Orange County) by ambulance where I was admitted to Pediatric ICU. In the first 3 days, I received 13 blood transfusions and 5 platelets transfusions. They moved me to the hematology and oncology floor, where I stayed with my dad for the next 3 weeks. After a week and half of extensive testing, I was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder that affects around 20,000 people a year. My bone marrow was in complete failure, not producing red or white blood cells, platelets or neutrophils. I received treatment for three weeks and was discharged while they looked for my unrelated bone marrow donor. My dad drove me to CHOC 2-3 times a week for blood labs, platelets and blood transfusions, typically spending 6-8 hours a day there. Once my bone marrow donor was identified I was readmitted on August 4th, my 13th birthday, to prepare for my bone marrow transplant. For 11 days I received chemotherapy to kill my failed bone marrow and I received my bone marrow from an anonymous donor on August 17th. Bone marrow transplant days are considered new birthdays, so I now have 2 birthdays, both in August. For the next 33 days I was confined to my small hospital room, waiting for my blood counts to rise to confirm my transplant was successful. My dad and I lived in my hospital room. My younger brother Ethan visited frequently. On the 34th day, my absolute neutrophil count was over 500 for 3 consecutive days and I was allowed to leave my room and walk around the hospital floor! My first day, I did 10 laps around the floor, about a 1,000 yards. It was great to be out of my room and see a little more of the world, even if it was in the hospital. After 53 days, my doctors discharged me from CHOC to go home! I had weekly hospital check-ups and my broviac port was surgically removed from my chest on October 31st . My aplastic anemia experience taught me to have faith in myself, to be grateful for my doctors, nurses, everyone at CHOC, my bone marrow donor, family and friends. I had an incredible support system of hundreds of people I never met. At one point when I was desperate for RH negative platelets so many people responded to a Facebook plea for platelet donations the CHOC blood services center was overwhelmed and couldn’t keep up with the phone calls and donations. I know many sick children benefitted from all the donations. I am grateful to my bone marrow donor who I hope to meet in a year, everyone who donated platelets, blood, and food, sent cards, visited and, mostly importantly, prayed for me and my family. What I learned over the past four months is the power of prayer and the goodness of people. I want to pay it forward by using my leadership skills to raise awareness for the desperate need for blood and platelet donors and encourage everyone to get tested as a possible bone marrow donor at bethematch.org. I will bring my gratitude for and love of life and leadership skills to make JSerra and the world better places.
