Guilin China part 1 Me and a group of friends decided to go exploring in Guilin as it was known for its beautiful landscape of limestone karst hills and snake like river flowing in between the mountains. We had planned on arriving in town and hiking along the river, having a picnic and then taking a boat back to the center of town. ... What we didn’t plan for was the unexpected. We didn’t plan to be stalked by a crazy old woman with 3 teeth, chasing us and trying to sell us old peanuts from her plastic red bags, the fact that we needed to have a ticket purchased beforehand for boat rides, and being nearly sunk by another boat. Dreamland -the castle and the moat A castle is a lot like retirement. You spend a majority of your life building it up, adding beautiful towers, a garden, even a statue to commemorate your success. Now that it’s built, you plan to enjoy your time in your garden watching your birds. That said, not everyone protects their castle. You can get attacked by invaders that want your wealth, Mother Nature may start a fire and try to burn you down, your own children may try to usurp ...you. Moral of the story is that there are a lot of ways for you to lose your castle. So wouldn’t it be beneficial to come up with a plan to protect it from as many scenarios as possible. Build a moat to protect against invaders, create a fire department for fire prevention, write a will for how your castle will be passed down to the next generation. Retirement is the same, you spend all of these years accumulating wealth to enjoy retirement so why not make sure it’s protected. Nara Dreamland An abandoned theme park in Japan that was originally modeled after Disney land. Dreamland did well until Tokyo built its own Disneyland that took away customers from Dreamland. In 2006 Dreamland closed its doors and it was like everyone got up and left without taking anything. As I explored Dreamland, all of the administrative buildings still had 1000s of employee files in cabinets, old computers from the 90s, and even mascot costumes in sealed bags, never to b...e worn. It was an untouched time capsule of someone’s dream that had lost its way. Dreamland didn’t fail from lack of hard work. Instead it failed from trying to steal someone else’s dream and call it its own. The moral of the story is, you have to carve out your own path in life because if you are following someone else’s dream then you won’t be able to be flexible with the times to be truly successful and to adapt to the changing environment. Harbin China, the snow and ice festival Harbin is famous for its annual snow and ice festival where they build massive snow sculptures. It’s also famous for having one of the largest tiger reserves in the world. These tigers are the apex predators, born to hunt and thrive in the wild. Instead they are stuck in a relatively large space where tourists get to drive around and throw chickens out the window to feed the tigers. The tigers inevitably get fat and lazy knowing they ...have an endless supply of food every day. Just like in life, if we have an endless supply of money but no purpose or drive then we will get lazy, fat, and depressed. All the money in the world means nothing without having passions and goals. That’s why I ask all my clients early on what they would do if they never needed money again. As that’s hopefully what retirement will look like, not needing to work anymore but still able to do something that drives you and motivates you. We weren’t meant to just work and die.
