Los Angeles County and surrounding areas are currently under quarantine for an insect that carries a disease that kills all species of citrus trees including oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, kumquats, etc. The Beyond Citrus series of workshops is being offered by the Los Angeles County Master Gardeners to show residents what can be done to help slow the spread of this incurable disease until an effective treatment is available. One approach is to plant non-...citrus alternatives, since only citrus and very close relatives of citrus can carry this disease and provide habitat for the insect. This workshop will focus on four fruit trees that are harvested in the fall: pomegranates, figs, jujubes and persimmons, all of which grow and produce well in a Mediterranean climate. Topics: - The many cultivars of pomegranates, figs, jujubes and persimmons available in local nurseries and by mail - Harvesting and preparation tips including healthy recipes - The unique flowering and fruiting habits of each species - Pruning and training methods for healthy, productive trees - The unique characteristics of the Asian Citrus Psyllid that make if easy to distinguish from other insects found on citrus trees - The symptoms of Huanglongbing or Citrus Greening Disease This workshop was live streamed on Facebook and Zoom.
Join us on Saturday December 5 at 10 am for a workshop on four fall producing fruit trees: pomegranates, figs, jujubes and persimmons. This workshop is part of ...our Beyond Citrus series, which encourages the planting of non-citrus fruit trees while Huanglongbing (aka Citrus Greening Disease) continues to infect and kill citrus trees in LA County and surrounding areas. This will be our first workshop that will be live streamed on both Facebook (this page) and Zoom. Zoom link: https://ucanr.zoom.us/j/95083259963
