05/07/21's Gem A short drive out to the mountainous area of Campo brings you to this week’s Hidden Gem Camp Lockett. Camp Lockett was a United States Ar...my military post and has historical connections to the Buffalo Soldiers due to the 10th, 11th and 28th Calvary Regiments having been garrisoned there during World War II. It was named in honor of Colonel James R. Lockett who fought in the Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, and the Punitive Expedition. Camp Lockett was designated as a California Historic Site in 2009 and is located on 167 acres of property in southeast San Diego County. Establishing an equestrian facility on the Camp Lockett grounds was long envisioned by the County of San Diego, but funding constraints overcame that ambition and CLEEF, a 501(c)3 corporation was formed by local citizens specifically to accomplish the goal of establishing and operating a unique equestrian facility on this historically significant and beautiful site. On the grounds is also the Camp Lockett Museum. The museum exhibits authentic uniforms and equipment utilized by the soldiers garrisoned in Campo who were busy guarding the southern border of the United States and prisoners of war from Italy. The museum is open Saturday and Sunday by appointment only. Today Camp Lockett hosts various events throughout the year such as Camp Lockett Gymkhana, motorcycle flat track racing, camping, junior rodeo, private events, and more. This Saturday, May 8th beginning at 9:15am, CLEEF will be hosting a Spring Festival with over 60 vendors selling baked goods, jerky, home décor, crafts, vintage jewelry, wine, leather goods, plants, farmhouse décor, horse tack, animal services and much more!
