Marymount Institute Author Spotlight | Heather King, author of Famished: A Food Memoir with Recipes
This week's Marymount Institute Alumni Spotlight goes to media aficionade, affiliate professor, and Scholar in Residence at the Marymount Insitute, Will Gish.
Housed at the Marymount Institute, the Marymount Center for Prayer and Peace is an interdenominational chapel, containing Hebrew, Christian and Muslim Scriptures as a conscious welcoming of the diversity of faiths among members of the LMU community. The entire front of the chapel is a colorful window designed by Sister Genevieve Underwood, RSHM, who was a member of the Art and Art History Department. The enclosed space of the chapel, with its rows of comfortable seats, is gently illuminated by the one window. A clear glass table was placed in front so that Catholic Mass may be celebrated without changing the nature of the space that is open to all for prayer and peace.

Remembering last year, when a group of talented artists from the LMU community worked together to create mural backdrops for the performance of the LMU Bellarmine Forum's Bernstein Mass.
We love the small details that give a book character. The inside cover of Famished: A Food Memoir with Recipes by Heather King is just as warm and personal as the series of essays and recipes housed within it.
Who is the Virgin of Guadalupe? What does she mean to millions of Latinos/as? How does the church interpret her? These questions are explored in American Woman: The Virgin of Guadalupe, Latinos/as and Accompaniment. The Virgin of Guadalupe has always been an inextricable part of Mexican and Mexican-American culture, but in recent times she is being embraced by working class Latinos/as, hipster Latina artists and liberation theologians alike. Her rising relevance could be attributed to a society grappling with issues of violence, poverty and racism. La Virgen's accompaniment of her pilgrims on a mission for justice and peace serves as a source of hope and strength. Professor Nabhan-Warren uses historical, theological and cultural lenses to compare recent manifestations of Guadalupe with the prevailing heavenly-focused Guadalupe.
Looking back at March 2020, when we hosted an intimate reading and Q&A with the brilliant Jamaica Kincaid. The past is a room full of baggage and rubbish and sometimes things that are of use, but if they are of real use, I have kept them. Jamaica Kincaid, The Autobiography of My Mother

Listen to author Frank Fromherz on the podcast, Beliefs to discuss his new book, A Disarming Spirit: The Life of Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen" (Marymount Institute Press/TSEHAI Publishers, 2019). A Disarming Spirit explores the legacy of Raymond Hunthausen: a priest from Montana who became Archbishop of Seattle during the height of the Cold War. He made his mark by challenging the U.S. government’s atomic and military policy, as well as by encouraging the Church to support ...the poor and marginalized. Hunthausen died last year after leaving his mark on our society and the Church he loved and served, which often didn’t support him. Get the book on www.tsehaipublishers.com
