I wonder whether these could be made in Burma with homegrown sustainable materials like bamboo to make them more locally affordable.. With solar power for electricity, fan assisted natural ventilation, and electrical power assisted sewage treatment these could be off the grid.

Since 2010, California has required all new homes to be built with a mechanical ventilation system with a filter to circulate air, regardless of whether the house has central heating or cooling. According to one scientist who helped draft the new standards, the change came about in response to a mounting body of scientific research showing that unventilated indoor air poses a major health hazard. A lot of people like to think that outdoor air is worse, said Max Sherman, a former scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers. But outside of wildfire scenarios, indoor air is almost always worse because we generate a lot of emissions indoors. Plastics and cleaning chemicals emit fumes, gas stoves and furnaces spit off combustion byproducts, and cooking itself can create dangerous levels of small particles especially in the 2.5-micron scale, the same type of particle afflicting Californians’ lungs during wildfire season. For the majority of Californians who live in older, unventilated housing, Sherman said, sticking with an affordable portable air filter is the best bet. You can put one in the room you’re gonna spend most of your time in and make a cleaner zone for yourself, he said.

The air quality is bad in Granada Hills today, September 12, 2020. I used an air quality monitor to measure TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds), PM 2.5 and ...PM 10 (Particulate Matter of less than 2.5 and 10 micron in size). Today's measurements are posted in comparison with previous measurements from a normal day. I also tested the effectiveness of my recirculating air purifiers. The air quality after 30 minutes of operation is posted. I can safely conclude that the air purifiers work. I can also conclude that outdoor air quality monitors are necessary to alarm the occupants to close the windows and turn on the air purifiers or to revert to minimum outdoor air operation of the HVAC equipment for buildings with 100% outdoor air economizers. Leaving the windows cracked open a little to allow some outdoor air ventilation to maintain the indoor CO2 levels do not affect the performance of the air purifiers significantly.

This tiny region on the coronavirus, located just 10 nanometers from the part of the spike protein that gloms onto a victim’s cells, has a positive charge. The scientists behind the discovery tested their work by blocking the region with a negatively-charged molecule, which then prevents the coronavirus from being able to target a host cell. I am wondering whether air purification devices like the bi-polar ionizers can neutralize this charge and render the air borne viruses harmless.

UV C or Plasma? UV C is proven to be highly effective in killing mold, bacteria, and viruses on the surfaces inside air handling units but the effectiveness in fast flowing air streams is not very well proven with reference to the Berkeley Lab article below. Office buildings are typically air conditioned with larger central air handling units. The hot or cold air is distributed into the spaces from overhead air diffusers which blow high velocity air into the space. This type of air distribution is termed by the industry as a mixing system because the high velocity jets of air induces the existing polluted air in the rooms and causes considerable mixing. Conventional Central Air Systems with overhead air distribution can spread a...ir borne infections like the COVID 19 easily. The systems with recirculated air and limited ventilation are worse. Systems with plenum returns are the worst. Additional outdoor air ventilation, better air filters and purification devices like UV-C or Bipolar Ionization are required for added safety. Underfloor or displacement ventilation can reduce air borne transmissions by reducing the air movement and mixing induced by overhead and sidewall air distribution.
