Public Lobby Closures in effect. In keeping with the public health order starting today by Marin Health and Human Services, the Sheriff’s Office will close our main lobby and the lobby in each of our substations. We anticipate the closure to last through January 4th, 2021 and at that time will update you on plans moving forward. One significant impact of this decision aimed at protecting our health is that there will be no fingerprinting and Livescan appointments. This will ...remain in effect until January 4th, 2021 in alignment with the public order. We know, for some, this will be one of many inconveniences in the weeks ahead. We want our neighbors to know that despite this public facing closure, the women and men of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office are on the job and focused on maintaining public safety during this trying time.

Marin County Search and Rescue locates missing man and his dog after night spent in the cold. A 71-year old male and his dog Yarrow went hiking Saturday afternoon in the Cascade area of Fairfax. When he did not return home after dark, a hasty search was initiated by Fairfax PD and Marin County open Space. Marin SAR was called in just after 10 p.m. and began an expansive overnight search in the region. K9s, a USCG helicopter, the Marin County Sheriff's UAV team and Marin SAR g...round teams were deployed throughout the steep trail system. As of 3 a.m., no material clues had been found, so mutual aid SAR resources were ordered from Sonoma, San Mateo/BAMRU, Contra Costa counties as well as the California Rescue Dog Association (CARDA). The search recommenced at 7a.m., and shortly thereafter we learned the male was able to obtain cell coverage and reach out to a family member. His cell location was traced to a steep, deep drainage in the upper San Anselmo Creek area. SAR, Fire and ranger teams were dispatched to the area but were hampered by extremely difficult terrain. Ground teams eventually reached the male and Yarrow after climbing their way up the creek drainage. No helicopters were available so plans were made for a long, arduous carry-out either via the creek drainage or through difficult sidehill path created by county fire crews. Fortunately, a CALFIRE rescue helicopter became available and the male was airlifted to safety. Yarrow hiked out with the rescue crews, and the male and Yarrow were reunited with their family members at the command post. This was a great example of cooperation between numerous agencies including the Marin County Sheriff's Office, MMWD, Fairfax PD, Open Space District, Marin County Fire, CALFIRE, United States Coast Guard and several regional SAR teams.

Marin County Major Crimes Task Force case leads to 10 year prison sentence. Timothy Melchior was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, announced United States Attorney David L. Anderson and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent in Charge Daniel C. Comeaux. Melchior, 33, of San Rafael, California, pleaded guilty to the charge on January 28, 2020. In pleading guilty, Melchior admitted he possessed methamphetamin...e with the intent to distribute it. In September of 2018, Marin County Major Crimes Task Force Detectives initiated an investigation into a known narcotics dealer in Marin County. Through their investigation, they identified Melchior as a narcotics supplier. Detectives executed a search warrant at Melchior’s residence on October 30, 2018. Inside the residence, Detectives found almost 200 grams of pure methamphetamine, along with distribution amounts of heroin and marijuana; multiple cell phones and laptops; a digital scale and drug packaging materials; approximately $12,000 in cash; and bank records showing that, despite being unemployed, the defendant possessed approximately $85,000 in his bank account. The currency was later seized as part of the investigation. Melchior has an extensive criminal record in Marin County to include nine prior adult convictions, including possession of narcotics, burglary, evading a peace officer, escape, and car theft. Melchior was released from Marin County Probation in early 2018 after successful completion. A federal grand jury indicted Melchior on December 20, 2018, charging him with possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine, in violation of 18 U.S.C. 841(a)(1) and (b)(1)(A)(viii). Melchior pleaded guilty to the sole count in the indictment. In addition to the prison term, US District Judge William H. Alsup also sentenced the defendant to a five-year period of supervised release. Melchior’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 26, 2021, to set a date to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force, and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

While driving to the area, multiple ...callers reported to our 911 dispatchers they heard what they believed were gun shots from the area of 100 Drake Avenue in Marin City. Deputies checking the area were unable to locate any shell casings or victims. While in the area a Deputy noticed a vehicle run a stop sign and then start driving erratically. The Deputy attempted to stop that vehicle and it increased speed and fled from the Deputy. A short distance later, the vehicle came to a stop on Cole Drive and the driver ran from the vehicle with a backpack.
