To keep up the planet saving momentum, SCORA's Environmental Committee has created a Zero Waste Resolutions Worksheet to be filled out by each club and returned by Feb 1st. Each club board is to select 2 items (resolutions) from the worksheet that benefit the planet, they can also suggest their own. The purpose of this exercise is to learn from each other while benefiting the planet. Small manageable steps taken together will make a difference. We encourage each club to sha...re their resolutions on social media. We are all learning, Let’s save the planet together even while we are apart. If you are a member of MDROCC we have created a survey so you can vote on your preferred resolution. See the link to the survey on our profile page. . . #Savetheplanet #SCORAOutTheWaste #KeepingMarinaBlue #GoMarina

Sandy Kahanamoku & Steven Kekuewa: Founders of Marina del Rey Canoe Club (MDROCC) was founded in 1967 by Sandy and Steven. It was the merger of two previous clu...bs, Santa Monica Outrigger Canoe Club and Kai Nalu Outrigger Canoe Club. Both Sandy and Steven were the coaches for the club for many years. With the passing of our founders Steve in 1997 and Sandy in 2003, we dedicate our effors to preserving their legacy and racing in their honor. Through the years, we have been proud to claim many firsts. The first women’s team to race the Catalina Channel Crossing in 1972. In order to be allowed to race, these bold women were required to bring both a doctor and a nurse onboard. Their heroism and dedication to the sport ensured a place for women in long distance canoe racing ever since. We are also proud to have Calvin Hirahara as a lifetime member of our club. Working with canoe designer Sonny Bradley from Hawaii, Calvin builds all of our canoes as well as the Bradley longboats for the entire West Coast. Without them, canoe racing in California as we know it would not exist.

I’ve always been a little scared to fly, but this was a smooth ride. .. September 11th 2020, 9 paddlers, spent hours on the water battling headwinds and cu...rrents to get to an island. Getting back wasn’t as hard, little push from the island. We picked up trash when we got there for #coastalcleanupmonth and #trainingoutthetrash #SCORAoutTheTrash Crossing oceans is fun. Here is a quick perspective of just one paddler. There were 8 other bad asses out there! . .. Awesome boat @puakeadesigns What a great trip to catalina and back, thanks to @mkelleydesign for organizing the trip! Thanks to @ozonesocal Lindsey, Joe and @thetomboyinheels for escorting! As many of you know, SCORA put together a committee this year to make our races greener and to encourage everyone to take simple steps to keep our oceans and waterways clean! Join SCORA and canoe clubs from So Cal in some Earth saving fun Sept 12th and 13th! In an effort to support Heal the Bay, we are encouraging everyone that is out on the water (beach, lake, river, WHEREVER) to pitch in and SCORA out the trash! Sept 12th and 13th would have been the wrap of our 2020 seaso...n and while we may not be celebrating in Catalina and Newport what better way to come together with other clubs than to give back to the ocean by picking up trash! Please share and tag your efforts by using #scoraoutthetrash and #trainingoutthetrash #keepingmarinablue on Instagram and Facebook. If you play there, clean there! .. ALSO All September long @healthebay is Celebrating Coastal Clean Up MONTH!! If you can’t make the weekend with us, you have all month long to make a difference. Remember small steps lead to giant leaps, just ask the astronauts! . pick up trash anywhere and dispose of it properly, take a picture of you and/or It and tag us! Remember your mask and social distancing. Saving each other is saving the environment. . Wherever you pick up trash BE SAFE, DON’T TRESPASS AND BE KIND!
