Backyard birders: a salmonella outbreak is afflicting Marin songbirds. If you spot sickly birds, WildCare recommends encouraging flocks to social distance, and not congregate at feeders. Take down songbird feeders and empty birdbaths for two to three weeks. Clean songbird feeders with a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, rinse well, and let dry before putting back up. Take care to wear gloves, and wash your hands after handling feeders. https://audubonportland.org//help-pine-siskins-by-practici https://www.marinij.com//marin-salmonella-outbreak-killing

Cows are returning to Mount Burdell. These bovines eat early growth of nonnative annual grasses, reducing fire fuel and thatch that can smother native wildflowers. Later, they’ll be moved out, giving native perennial grasses time to grow and flower in summer.

Fall is raptor season in Marin! Why do we see so many hawks during the fall? And why do we hear owls hooting at night? Is there anything you’d like to know about our local hawks, eagles, falcons, owls, or other raptors? Live on Instagram (@MarinCountyParks)! Join our naturalist, Shannon Burke as she answers your pre-submitted raptor questions on November 5 @ 11am. If there’s time, we’ll open it up to more questions. http://bit.ly/RaptorsMarin

Right off the bat for #BatWeek2020 here we have the Western Red Bat, a very prominent species in California. While it might look scary, these furry little bats ...prefer to munch on moths and beetles when they hunt just after sunset. However, they are often solitary and roost by themselves or in small clusters. They can even hang off of only one foot for long periods of time, quite the acro-bat! Bats, like this western long-eared myotis (Myotis evotis), drink water just like any other mammal. Bats are nature's bug zappers, eating up to 1000 mosquitos an hour. There are 13 species of bats in Marin. All of these dine on insects, not blood! Learn more about Bay Area bats: https://bit.ly/35HjjGi #HappyHalloween #BatWeek
