This is board member, Eleanore Fernandez, sharing a meaningful connection, as we all continue to speak-up about Asian attacks. I met many caring community leaders at the C100 S.F. Chinatown Community Renaissance kick-off meeting. A dozen personally welcomed me, too just as I was about to leave at the end of this event. As I was going out the door, Mr. Carl Chan from the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce said some kind words to me about a statement I made at the meeting, ...about telling our stories, that we worked hard alongside each other in our neighborhoods for years. He wished me well for the community work I am trying to do. I only told him if I can have the courage & strength of heart he has shown, even within this week, I will continue to be as passionate as him. If you didn't hear in the local Bay Area news, Carl just last week was attacked, the assailant hurled racial slurs at him before hitting him on his head, as he was walking in Oakland to visit an elderly Asian man who was also assaulted. He had fallen, blacked out for a moment, had the presence of mind enough to snap a pic of him as he walked away. So, because of that pic,the police were able to I.D. him and arrest the man. Yet, here he was days after that terrible incident, in the room with us all. I admire him for always being vocal and standing up for what is decent and right in protecting our elders and making us aware of these assaults in Oakland. I asked him if he was doing okay and he just said he is just fine, just bruises, don't worry, we are all just helping. Also, he said he is always going to remember me the next time he sees me because his wife's name is Eleanore, too. He said that everyone loves "Eleanors/ Eleanores" I am inspired by selfless, brave leaders like him. It shores me up, mentally bolsters me for this work we do. I will continue to pray for his safety, too. His presence and our brief conversation motivates me to do more and keep our voices heard. #Chinatown #ChinatownOaklandChamberofCommerce #StopAPPIHate #CarlChan Committee of 100 More about Carl's recent attack; https://www.ktvu.com//president-of-oaklands-chinatown-cham

We would like to thank David Lei, Vice Chairman with the Chinese American Community Foundation (http://www.chineseamericancf.org) and also Chairman with the Chinese Performing Arts Foundation for inviting Manilatown Heritage Foundation to the Committee of 100/ C100 and the Asian Pacific Islander Council Asian Pacific Islander Council Chinatown Renaissance 2021 Initiative at Victory Memorial Hall at 827 Stockton Street this past Tuesday. It was compromised of over 60 leaders... in business, community based orgs, non-profits like us, and civic leaders brought together to come up with ideas to revitalize Chinatown post-COVID and develop a unified grant proposal seeking new and incremental foundation funding for Chinatown revitalization projects in San Francisco and other major American cities. It was their kick-off meeting and very much appreciate David's warm introduction of our organization and his memories of the I-Hotel manongs when he was a teen. His story about playing pool with them was uniquely Manilatown. We hope to hear more personal histories like the ones David shared to get a sense of the close ties our manongs/ Fil-Ams had with the Chinese American community in the past. Also, that we still should have now today. This year the impact of the pandemic, shutdowns, and anti-Asian xenophobia has had a big economic impact in Chinatown and therefore, now is the time that we need to all come together as good neighbors to help each other during these tough economic times. The speakers at the event were David Lei, Jane Chin, co-chair for the BOD of the Chinatown Community Development Center and formerly the Interim Director of the Chinese Historical Society of America, Attorney Nancy Yu with the Chinatown Merchants United Association, Buck Gee with the Chinatown Business Consortium, and Dan Lee with the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. #SFChinatown #SanFranciscoChinatown #SFChinatownRenaissanceInitiative #Revitalization #COVID19 #EconomicImpacts #EconomicDownturn #StopAPPIHate #Xenophobia #Grants #Funding #WorkTogether #BuildABetterChinatown #ManilatownHeritageFoundation #ManilatownCenter #IHotel #InternationalHotel #Manilatown #GoodNeighbors #Neighborhood #BelovedCommunity Committee of 100

Note from Eleanore Fernandez, board member with MHF; If we could ever say we have an instant family/ real pamilya then it would be this tight crew right here. Ladies & gents, all the props and shine go to this amazing group of folks who all through this pandemic year make-up the engine that run the International Hotel Manilatown Center via Manilatown Heritage Foundation. All the virtual events would not have been possible from b.t.s./ behind-the-scenes, without from the firs...t photo, (L to R) Sheryl Maria Fontanilla , Jibril Alvarez , Tony Remington, (me, Eleanore), Caroline Julia Cabading ,Marielle Concejo, and Chet Canlas. Without them, we could not have brought all these worthwhile events, discussions, panels, and watch parties without their planning, organization, quick thinking, and know-how. They are our production team, photographers, camera, lights, musicians, artists, customer service reps, techies, A/V, and plain super humans who work so hard and at same time, play hard when we broke bread and celebrated"face-to-face-all-of-us-vaccinated-time" last night at Caroline's fave Italian spot, TOMMASO's. Please show them some love because they are unsung over the years with the organization and we need to give props where props are due. This is the small and mighty team and they get it done I have nothing but love for each of them. #SquadGoals #BehindTheScenes #Staff #ProductionTeam #LightsCameraAction #ManilatownHeritageFoundation #IHotel #InternationalHotel #Teamwork #Dreamwork #ManyHands #LightWork

Manilatown MovieTime presents Lumpia on Sat., Nov. 14th, 6 PM Please join us for the "Lumpia" Online Watch Party and Community Discussion Please join the Manilatown Heritage Foundation for an Online Manilatown MovieTime Watch Party of the film LUMPIA followed by a Community Discussion with the LUMPIA Director, Patricio Ginelsa.... Written and directed by Patricio Ginelsa Jr., LUMPIA (2003) takes you back to the late-90s where tension is at an all-time high in Fogtown High School. This becomes the setting for a low-budget movie taken to new heights. Shot in Daly City over a period of six years, this genre-spoofing film delightfully gets out of hand with Leroid David’s deft cartoon panels framing the action and setting the tone for Patricio Ginelsa’s street-level affectionate look at kid-culture among Filipino immigrants. The plot centers on the conflict between established immigrants, shown here entrenched with a straight-outta-Compton attitude, and the more naive islanders fresh off the boat. For those not familiar with the term "F.O.B.", the term is a negative term given to Filipinos who have recently immigrated to America from the Philippines. For many Filipinos, and depending where you live, there has always been tension among Filipino Americans towards Filipino immigrants. It can be the differences of clothing style, speaking in the native language instead of English, or whatever reason Filipino Americans have used against Filipino immigrants. Unfortunately, this is something that many Filipinos have seen and experienced but "LUMPIA" shows that unity amongst our community members is important, and has to be advocated for. The cast features a newly-named James (Francis Custodio) and his nerdy crew who are always in danger from big cheese Tyrone (Edward Baon), but all James wants to do is get with cute Kelly (Elizabeth Mendoza), while a slow R&B tune plays whenever she appears. The FOBs have a protector, the Silent Avenger (mustachioed Carlos Baon) who has, as a snack or a weapon, lumpia, our world-famous, deep-fried eggrolls. #LUMPIA #lumpiawithavengeance #ManilatownHeritageFoundation #ManilatownMovieTime #DalyCity #Bullying #comingofagemovie #FilAm EVENTBRITE (RSVP HERE): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/manilatown-movietime-presents- FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/276057556876868/ Manilatown.org EVENTS: manilatown.org/events/#movie Donations: paypal.me/manilatown "Manilatown Heritage Foundation accepts donations of any amount.
