One thing I’ve long been saddened by is the lack of teaching in Mandarin immersion schools about this history of Asians in the United States and especially the history of Chinese Americans. Our kids read books about the Spring Festival and red envelopes, but don’t learn about the Chinese Exclusion Act or the shameful history of anti-Chinese mob attacks and murders on the West Coast. This post includes some great resources for kids to learn more about Chinese American and Asian American history.

Because of the cancellation of the Gala Saturday night, we have moved the entire Gala Live Auction and Raffle to our Online Auction and are rallying the community to raise as much as we would have at our Gala. Although it is a big task, we are optimistic that with the generous support of our community, we can do it. Bidding starts tonight Sunday at 8pm and ends Thursday, March 12th at 10pm. Are you aware that the FMS Fundraising Gala raises more than half of the FMS budget ...for each school year? The money raised funds the Mandarin Teaching Aides who make small group learning possible; before and after school Mandarin homework help; enrichment classes at Bayside Academy; as well as participation in the Chinese New Year parade. All of these programs and staff positions ensure the continued success of the Mandarin programs at College Park and Bayside Academy. For next school year, we still need to raise $120,000. Since neither of the schools receive any State or Federal funding for the programs and staff positions listed above, we are asking for your support.
