Dr. Laurence Fakinos, OB/GYN, has been coming to Mammoth for years to enjoy everything our area has to offer. In 2019, he made the dream to move here from San Clemente a reality and signed on as a full-time provider in our Women's Health Department. We're very grateful he did!

We’re excited to announce the move of Women’s Health department to our Specialty Clinic. This move is happening tomorrow, January 9th, resuming appointments in the new building by Monday, January 11th. The why behind the move is twofold. One, it creates synergy with the other specialties offered and will also allow us to utilize staff and our new building to improved levels of efficiency. The second part is, as a hospital, our greatest responsibility for serving our com...munity in health is our primary care team. To best amplify this service requires integration of Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, and Population Health. The current Family Medicine space in square footage alone halts that potential. As we remodel the space with a larger footprint, we can be strategic in our investment to focus all four departments toward simultaneous improvement for our patient’s health and notable care. We realize all moves may come with a brief inconvenience. This is expected. The hope is as a team, we can be as organized and pointed as possible to diminish disruption to patient care over the weekend. Thank you in advance for your understanding during this move and we look forward to seeing our Women's Health patients in the new building next week!

Here is the latest information on vaccinations from Mono County Public Health, where you can look at current vaccination status for our county, view tiers and phases, as well as pre-register to get the vaccine for your group.

Mammoth Hospital 15.12.2020

We have received many questions regarding the timeline of the COVID vaccine in our county. Here is a summary of Mammoth Hospital’s role in Mono County Public Health’s (MCPH) plan: Phase 1A MCPH allocated to Mammoth Hospital enough vaccine to inoculate all employees and medical staff who elected to receive the vaccination. Today over 300 staff have received the vaccine. Phase 1B - MCPH has requested Mammoth Hospital's assistance to vaccinate some of those who are indicated... for administration in Phase 1B (people over the age of 75) using the limited amount of vaccines remaining from the hospital’s 1A allocation. MCPH will continue to distribute and administer vaccines through its phased roll-out plan. For specifics on the plan and other Frequently Asked Questions, visit the Mono County vaccination page link here: https://coronavirus.monocounty.ca.gov/pages/vaccinations. Another great resource for frequently asked questions is the recent Community Conversation held yesterday. Link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD083qhAQic&feature=youtu.be

Did you know that today is National Pharmacist Day? We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of our Pharmacy staff who make it possible for our patients to receive the life-changing medical care that they need. This excellent team ensures all nurses and physicians have all the medication required for a positive outcome and that all of our Pyxis stations (automated dispensing cabinets) are loaded and running as they should. Our Pharmacy is responsible f...or IV admixture and compounding of sterile preparations and establishing policies and procedures for medication use within the facility. They also review patient medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness. Patient safety is their primary goal and we appreciate them for their dedication every day! It's been the year that keeps on giving. First COVID, 8 weeks of poor air quality due to smoke, and now flu season. Here's Dr. Burrows, our Chief Medical Officer on why it's important to get your flu shot this year. Stay safe all!

Like the rest of the state of California, Mono County is currently seeing a significant surge in COVID-19 cases. Asymptomatic patients, symptomatic patients not needing hospitalizations, symptomatic patients requiring hospitalization, and symptomatic patients requiring transfer to a higher level of care, have all been seen and treated at Mammoth Hospital in the past thirty days. As a result of this rise in cases, the Governor has issued a regional stay-at-home order to go int...o effect once regional hospital ICU capacity drops below 15%. In this plan, Mono county has been assigned to the southern region, which also includes Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Inyo counties. It is not the status of Mammoth Hospital alone that determines when this order goes into effect. Rather, it is the status of all the hospitals within the region. At this point, the entire state is approaching a critical capacity shortage and there is no recourse to petition regional assignments. A colored tier system is currently being utilized to communicate Mammoth Hospital’s ability to care for patients: Green: There is no impact on the capability to care for any patient requiring care. Yellow: The ability to care for some patients may be compromised, due to COVID-19 cases in the hospital, staffing, bed capacity, and/or resources. Red: The hospital’s capacity is saturated and the ability to care for additional patients is compromised as a result. Mammoth Hospital is currently in Green status. The color-code status of the hospital can be seen by going to the Mono County COVID-19 Response page and clicking on the Case Stats button: https://coronavirus.monocounty.ca.gov. If, and more likely when, the region’s ICU capacity drops below 15%, the stay-at home order will go into effect with all the associated restrictions. The following link to the COVID.CA.GOV site shows updated ICU capacity by region: https://covid19.ca.gov/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs/

This week is National Infection Prevention Week and we want to celebrate and recognize Staci Brock, our Infection Prevention Coordinator. Staci has been a nurse at Mammoth Hospital since February 2018. She took the position as Infection Prevention Coordinator last year after first working as a Labor and Delivery nurse. COVID-19 has shown the world what we’ve always known. Infection Prevention Nurses are essential to keeping us all safe. Infection Prevention Week was establi...shed in 1986 to highlight the efforts of those preventing all infections, but this year the tireless efforts of the position are more important than ever, fighting the global pandemic. Staci’s regular duties include timely and accurate reporting to CDPH and the CDC, monitoring and reporting the disease process of COVID-19, and continually researching the best ways to keep patients and staff as safe as possible. Staci has been a part of our Hospital Incident Management Team since it was formed in March, and her contributions have been immeasurable. Thanks Staci for your dedication and for all you do to keep our patients, staff, and community safe!

With smoke from the #creekfire this bad in our area right now, it's another one of those "stay inside for your health" kind of days as going outside is not recommended. Let's hope for rain, snow, or anything else that'll improve this hazardous air quality in the near future.

Meet Candace, the newest member of our Population Health team. Candace is a Registered Nurse who joined Mammoth Hospital in 2017. She has spent much of her nursing career in emergency and trauma medicine in Southern California. In 2018, she moved to Mammoth with her Fiancé full time, to chase their dreams of living and working in the Eastern Sierra. In April, she joined the Population Health Team, serving the Medicare population of Mammoth and surrounding communities. Our P...opulation Health Department aims to care holistically for the Medicare population of the Eastern Sierra. We work collaboratively with all members of the health care team, for patients with two or more chronic conditions, with the goal of decreasing unnecessary hospital and emergency department admissions. This approach to care empowers patients to take an active role in managing their health, to optimize their overall wellbeing. Outside of work, Candace enjoys all the adventures that the mountains have to offer, making Mammoth a perfect fit for both her skillsets as a nurse as well as hobbies and interests!

A while back we wrote about Ryan Tetz, who outside his job as an OR nurse at Mammoth Hospital, likes to pursue "hard things. There are 13 peaks above 14,000' in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Ryan Tetz set out to summit all 13 14ers in a single push. A successful effort requires more than 100 miles of travel, much of it off-trail, and over 40,000 feet of elevation gain. We truly don't know how he does it but here is a video showing the feat.... https://vimeo.com/447922920

Q: If 2020 were a drink, what would it be? A: Colonoscopy Prep. ...in all seriousness:... Regular screening, beginning at age 50, is the key to preventing colorectal cancer. Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Every year, about 140,000 people in the United States get colorectal cancer, and more than 50,000 people die of it. Risk increases with age. More than 90% of colorectal cancers occur in people who are 50 years old or older. Precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer don’t always cause symptoms, especially at first. If you have symptoms, they may include blood in or on the stool, stomach pain that doesn’t go away, or losing weight and you don’t know why. If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor. There are several screening test options. Talk with your doctor about which is right for you. Only about two-thirds of adults in the United States are up-to-date with colorectal cancer screening. If you are over 50, it’s time to get your preventative colonoscopy screening. For more info or to make an appointment, go to www.mammothhospital.com.
