Gig companies poured $200 million to push their false narrative that Prop 22 will provide more protections for their drivers. They falsely claimed that drivers' pay will increase, while failing to mention that the companies' analysis only took into account time engaged time (e.g., driving to pick-up a passenger, and the ride itself), and not non-productive time spent on the app, but not engaged with a customer. The companies also underestimated expenses including fuel, vehic...le damage and car-value depreciation. Perhaps most upsetting is the near-impossibility for a legislative fix, thanks to a sly move by the gig companies to slip-in a provision requiring a super-duper-majority of 7/8 of the legislature to touch Prop 22. Big corporations now understand that, if they sink enough money into pushing false narratives regarding their employees, they can misclassify workers and save hundreds of millions of dollars, all without any legislative interference.
