When covid-19 hit, we promised to immerse ourselves in all the things that make us happy. This year has been filled with so much worry, so we dove deep into the art of natural plant dyes. It was a way a to celebrate plants and keep our minds and hands busy. What ending up happening is re-discovering and re-membering these practices that have been cut off from us. Colonization has taken so much from the Philippines and our diaspora, but returning to practices like natural pla...nt dyes feels like re-claiming a part of who i am as a Filipina. All the blue textiles you see in our history is dyed with indigo. There isn’t much documented about this process in the Philippines but my hope is that as we embrace this plant ancestor more and more, we can start to excavate and unearth our own dye practices. We love seeing its transformation from green to blue. It’s a plant that captures the shades of both the ocean, and sky -from day to night. Whether it’s watching plants transform from seed, to plant, to flower, to vapor and turned into medical waters called Hydrosol, or reveling in a plant’s beauty by turning plants into nature’s paint and seeing the rainbow of colors it can produce through natur...al plant dying.
