Multichannel magic "...Over the past week, I've done, for the first time, some serious listening to the updated version of my all-Magico multichannel systemperhaps uniquely a Magico "surround sound" setup optimized for music, rather than cinema. So, two M2s and an S3Mk2 in front, two S1Mk2s for the surrounds, and the S-Sub. An Anthem D2v processor and all Pass amplification (three XA 60.8s and an Aleph 0s stereo amp for the back speakers.) I started listening with the new Ba...etis Revolution X3 server that I just finished reviewing and, after that went back to Montreal, returned to my usual Baetis Reference 2. With 5.0 and 5.1 recordings, the virtues of multichannelthe "democratizing" aspect of what can happen spatially in a modest-sized roomwere fully evident. But it was when I played four-channel recordingsPentaTone RQRs, for instance, that the experience went from remarkable to transcendent. The sense of the recording venue was extraordinaryfor example, Wembley Town Hall for a 1974 recording of Rossini Overtures by Neville Marriner or the Concertgebouw with a Ravel program from 1971 led by Bernard Haitink. It's a cliché, of course, but with my eyes shut, I felt transported to those rooms. In the meantime, with two, four, or five Magicos in service, the pandemic sometimes doesn't seem so bad here.
